I do, of course realise how serious hurricane damage is, and do have a every sympathy for anyone who has suffered in any way, but we know how they build houses over here.. construction seem to be akin to some Wendy House effort.
I can't understand how houses seem to be so flimsily-built, and then there seems to be a lot of surprise when they do suffer weather damage. I mean, why don't they build sturdier homes? Is it that they don't want them to last, or am I missing out on some other important reasoning?
Wouldn't a house built the traditional Brit way be more durable?
Someone enlighten me on this one, please.
lots of trees = wood houses.
It's teh same over here too. I guess it's cheaper to build wood box homes, and they are quicker to put up as well, compared to a proper brick homes, that will takes a long time, and a lot of materials.
Another thing is, if they build brick homes, a lot of people might not be able to afford them, so cost plays an important role.
Most houses in the US are built of wood. My last house in the UK was I think solid rock considering all the drill pieces I blunted. You can even purchase kit houses now that are about 2/3 of the normal cost. Obviously, they do not stand up well in a tornado or hurricane, but it means you get a nice house for your buck.
wood houses = "I'll huff anf I'll puff anf I'll blow your house down" though.
Maybe they never heard of the three little pigs either....

we don't get many hurricanes in Michigan.

Is this definitive proof that British people are generally richer than American people?

>>>>>>If you want to look @ it that way, that is your problem. Anyhoo....I was looking at it from a population stance. The US has 4 times the number of people we have, no meidcare, and employment is not exactly 100 percent is it?
>>>>>>>Just because there is brick houses in the UK, doesn't mean everyone living in one, owns it.
I would much rather have a wood house and 1 acre of land than a brick house attached to another with a 20x20ft back yard.

So what? USA has many times the land area, infinitely more resources and the capability to educate, feed, employ, house and clothe every citizen for the GDP that it commands. If a nation chooses to keep a percentage in poverty, then perhaps it should be recognised as being a poorer nation.
Your second point may be correct but in my experience, it is not - all my family, extended family and friends in UK either owned outright or were paying off mortgages on houses (all made of brick I might add). Even the much-maligned Mrs. Thatcher was all for home ownership and cut some killer deals for people to buy their (brick) council houses at bargain prices.
Could such a deal ever happen here?

Could you say the same if you'd just lost your wood house in New Orleans and your acre was underwater?
I have a wood house and 1/3 acre of land but however nice it looks, it would be no match for nature's wrath. My sister's former council house might lose a few tiles off the roof.

>>>>Except from providing good health care like we have here? Which will explains the influx every year, for flu vaccine. The GDP you say...we know where all that goes don't we, fighting silly wars and interfering in others business.
Am sure the families of the soldiers that died recently in the car bomb in Iraq are all for it now, now that it has hit closer to home for them  THat is what !

Such as?
(BTW, for such a computer genius, shouldn't you at least have the hang of quotes?)
