We've booked to go to the States to visit my wife's parents and friends for Thanksgiving. It will be the first time I've travelled there with my wife, and first time since we got married - so we wondered if they will find it suspicious if I'm entering on Visa Waiver. (Previously I've always been going there on my own, and stated I was "visiting friends"). Would it be sensible to have some documents that show I intend to return to the UK? I was thinking of mortgage statement and payslips maybe.

Just for fun it'll also be my first trip since I had my passport renewed. Would it be worth carrying my old passport just in case (with several pages of US entry stamps in it...)

thanks for any thoughts

(me - UK, she - US with UK FLR)

Certainly wouldn't do any harm, would it?

As monster said, it wouldn't do any harm, but I'm sure your return ticket will also reassure them.

Hope you have a nice visit. smile

I doubt it. Return tickets are cheaper than singles. We emmigrated on returns. So did all the other people the company shipped out.

I have a feeling that there is new visitor's visa specifically for people who have immigrant intent.

Maybe I dreamt it though. I'll check it out and post back.

What immigration is looking for is evidence that you intend to leave the US. Make sure your statements are recent.. ie, not 2 months ago and you should be ok. I know a couple of others who have done the same thing and never had a problem.

By the way, I've heard a rumour that you can go through the US passport line as a family unit. Much faster if it's true. We didn't try it on the strength of our baby being American as the time we flew with him the lines weren't too bad.

We were just talking about that last night. Usually at Logan there's someone hanging around directing people into the lines so we can just ask them. We did wonder if it being just before Thanksgiving means that most people on the flight will be Americans though. We'll see.
