Bought this series on DVD from Amazon UK (we have a multiregion player) purely because it was their number one selling documentary, so I thought I'd take the risk. It is currently airing on Bravo in the U.S. I'm sure they'll repeat it. No sign of the DVD here yet though.

I thought it was the most fantastic series.

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman (director John Boorman's son), who are close friends and crazy about motorbikes, decide to go to New York, the "...long way round". That is through Europe, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, Russia, Alaska, Canada and the U.S.

They travel with a third motorcyclist, an Italian cameraman and because they are going through some of the world's most isolated areas (particularly Siberia and the "road of bones" in Russia leading up towards Alaska) they are followed at a respectable distance by a support crew.

The 6-part series works both as an amazing travelogue through parts of the world we rarely stop to consider (Kazakhstan and Mongolia were quite beautiful and the people were amazing) and the gruelling physical challenge of motorbiking the whole thing. My interest in motorbikes is nil but I still found their trip completely enthralling and followed every part of the challenge on the edge of my seat.

What also really made it for me was the very British humour they both shared. They were both funny and irreverant. They came across at times as bumbling British lads out for a bit of a laugh. It was like rock and roll version of Michael Palin's travelogues. Instead of walking into the 16th century church of bones in the Czech Republic with quiet reverance, they would stride in and say "F*** me! Look at that!" This doesn't mean they were boorish or disrespectful to the people or places they visited.

Couldn't reccommend it more. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Hiya mate!!

I did watch it before on Bravo, (and posted about it on here too, not as though it matters a whole lot? wink ) but good work on getting the DVD (I'm so jealous of you at this moment in time twisted ) and thanks for pointing out that its being repeated. I'd love to watch it again; in fact I missed a couple of episodes so it'll be good to watch it. I loved it when they were in the old soviet union and they were staying with some dodgy russian mafiaesque characters, who were pretty decent hosts and gave their guests some complimentary shooters for just incase at night!! wink

Ive wanted to see this series again for ages so I'm going to look out for it idea
Saw it here in Canada as well, think it was on TV Ontario actually. It was really interesting, they are some difficulties along the way ( border crossings ), but they got thru.

There was even a torrent site that had it up for a while, probably still be seeded

I'm sure the DVD will pop up soon on Amazon and the like. They've already got the book on Amazon U.S

Like BoC I saw bits of this on Bravo - looked really interesting.

ukm
Dang, I heard it on the radio and must have missed the bit where they said it was also done visually.

Radio 4 addiction continues, with brief breaks for 3 and 7. lol
We watched when it was on before and really enjoyed it. Thanks for mentioning it Lee 'cos the old man would love to watch it again.
I just thought I'd let you know that Long Way Round is currently being shown on the Fox Reality Channel. I found it by complete accident last night!!
It's currently into the russian part of the journey, with the dodgy russian mafia esque types!! wink

Just a heads up for anyone who wants to watch it. idea
Just added it to Beest's Netflix list D
Personally thought they both came over as two conceited and boring pratts.

The fat one's wife was hot though and worth a gander just for that.
just ordered this on Amazon for my wife for xmas.

That would be the two conceited pratts who did stops on the journey and did stuff for unicef.....
I personally found them to be normal and down to earth as opposed to boring and egotistical.

It's also available here for free

Sounds really good - will get that one when I can find it.

I remember Charley Boorman when he was a little kid playing Mordred in his dad's film "Excalibur". He was pretty creepy back then but looked like a decent horse rider for his age.
Whilst Christmas shopping a spotted 'Long Way Round' at two of Toronto's downtown music shops. So it's obviously available in North America now.

It was a really good price too, considering it's a ten-part series CAN$26

It's also here

For only US$13.99 but this seems to be a cut-down seven part series roll

Why do they do this?

Anyway, it's available now.....sort of.
