Just wondered what y'all do for bread over here. I can't for the life of me get used to eating sweet bread. I've tried just about all the different kinds I've seen and nothing tastes like the good old British loaf. roll
Do a search for 'Bread'. Should yield a good read
What she said. The search button is about 2 inches below the r in the Forum logo. Some topics come up so often we prefer just to reuse the old ones ;)
You have to look around. Try a Panera Bread if there's one around. We have a French Bakery around here where the bread is delicious.

Your nearest Panera to you(OK, I was bored razz ) is

Vista Ridge Mall

Lewisville, TX 75067

Wow.. thanks all.. especially adeshell. I'm off to Vista Ridge! I'll let you know. smile
After a couple of months I'd had enough of the stuff on the shelves so I started making my own. We haven't bought bread since the start of April. grin
Anyone else make their own?
Hell no, I must be the only Britnetter who actually likes the bread over here.

Anyone else like the native cuisine of their adopted homeland or is it just me?
Yeah, I bought a breadmaker and all. Then after a couple of loaves, I couldn'y be arsed anymore, so its ended up in the basement. The wholewheat bread here isn't that bad, its the white bread that the worst.

To be honest I always thought British bread sucked (too sweet for me), I always preferred true French bread over UK bread, and (gawd forbid - all those nasty cream cakes).

I'm actually quite fond of truly well made sourdough bread (like the stuff you can buy from one of the best bread shops in the world - boy that was sweeping huh?), called Gayles!

But yes, I make my own (bread) too when the weather cools, but I have a 10 year old sourdough starter that I use and refresh each time.

Andrew :)

British bread is better than what you get here, don't even start me off with the milk and eggs.
Sourdough bread is the worst in the entire world.

I've had mouldy bread that tasted better than that "effort". Where does it originate from anyway?
Yes, make all my own bread...white, wheat, rolls, hot cross buns, foccacia, Irish wheaten. It's no big deal, you just have to get into the habit of making it regularly. smile

No way...

Sorry but in terms of dairy produce and eggs, the organic foodstuffs we can get here in California make the stuff in the UK look like past sell by date stuff...

To be even more honest, having spent some appreciable time surveying foodstuffs and supermarkets all over this country this year, I can see why so many of you feel the food is better back there....

It's like I have said before.  Unless you live round here you have no idea how good some of the produce is.  In fact, it's not even worth arguing over.

You also get some of nicest brewed beers around here too (and ciders...)

P007 - I think sourdough is an acquired taste, it wasn't something I was fond of until I made my own, and/or tried what is available at Gayles near home.

But sourdough is true bread, real French bread is actually sourdough. I think sourdough started in France P007

Andrew :)

I don't eat the same bread here as I did in UK.
I always ate white there, never eat it now unless its a burger bun.
Changed from sliced white to other breads whilst living in Spain.
I like the wheat and grain breads I get here.
Same with milk, always had whole milk there, milk in Spain was different too, got used to it same as here.

Celticana, yes the American's make thier bread sweet and the quality just isn't as good as the U.K.

I am soooo lucky cos my local Brit Store Sells 'Hovis', it's frozen so I just stick emm in my frezzer and take out slices whenever I want any and it still tastes GREAT!!! Any Brit Store can get British Bread in if they want to as there's a company that ships them over to different places in the U.S

Panera Bread, I have tried and its better than most U.S Shelf bread but still no where near as good as U.K bread. I have tired French Stores etc and their bread is also better than Shelf bread, but still not as good as U.K bread as 'MOST' Brits would agree.
