As you probably know, going out for breakfast in the U.S is a fairly popular thing. when my friend came over for our wedding bash earlier in the year he was surprised at the amount of food available and the whole culture of bottomless buffets, must admit it got me a little worried too. But the main thing was the lack of proper cream. I mean there you are with a nice cream puff, all set for a cardiac-seizing breakfast when, horror of horrors, the stuff on the inside is out of a can. What made it worse/funnier was that we were in Wisconsin, the dairy state. Nowhere had cream.
Is this normal?
I know its sposed to be "Bad for you" but what isn't? All in moderation i say. grin
You need to look for heavy whipping cream. Costco and Sam's Club have it in decent-sized containers; it's much harder to find in ordinary supermarkets - but you look in the same place where they have sour cream and dips.
Never had any problem finding cream in any supermarket over this way. May be you aren't looking in the right place, have you tried asking a store clerk?
I don't know of a supermarket around here that doesn't have it, the Wawas have it.
No problems here finding the heavy whipping cream either, but I don't think it's quite the same as we're used to in the UK. Can't put my finger on the difference though.

Interesting imagery here

It's just not as thick and velvety, plus it tends to separate more readily than the stuff back home after it has been whipped unless you put oodles of stabilisers in it.

V. disappointing really.

OK, the difference here is that the Heavy Whipping cream or the Whipping cream here has something added too it to make it whip, I forget the name of it. Double cream back home has about a 10% higher fat content that Whipping cream here.

Double cream back home is basially the cream taken right off the top of the milk and put into a container. In America they don't do that, they mess about with it and water it down to half and half or make it into whipping cream. As the cream off the top of the milk DOES NOT Whip.

Single Cream back home has about a 18% fat content, Half and Half has only about a 10%.

It is possible to get a hold of decent cream and milk though!

Cream-Top Whole Milk like from back home you can get and the cream on the top is AMAZING!! just like back home...I got my local health food store to order it in for me!
http://www.strausmilk.com/pages/ourproducts.html

They also sell that same cream right off the top of the milk! But they call it whipping cream, I tried whipping it and it didn't whip!!

Also, if you want real milk like back home, try
http://www.farmersallnaturalcreamery.com

they sell the cream on top milk too!

Hope that helps!

The difference is it's sturdier than your nan's knickers with stuff in it that would be the envy of Nasa scientists.

I actually bought ordinary "whipping cream" yesterday. I whipped and whooped that stuff for the best part of 30 minutes. Needless to say, it wouldn't whip up!

Mental note Buy a new whip!

Actually, the trick with working with whipping cream is that you need to make sure your bowl (hopefully stainless) and cream are VERY cold, in other words stick the bowl in the freezer for 10 mins before you add the very COLD cream and whip.

And you have to WHIP to get air into it.  In other words, the whisk should NOT touch the bottom of the bowl when you whisk.

Andrew :)

We buy real whipping cream from sams club does,nt taste quite the same as back home but close .
