So I was trawling through uknet and I came across this huge gallery of northern british food. Some looks good, some looks awful.

What's with the prevalence of fried eggs on everything? And no beans with a fry up? Scandal.

Why, oh why did I have to torture myself by looking at the pics? cry
I was amazed at some of the ghastly stuff there. I never had chips for breakfast, cut into 1/4" slices and fried with the bacon, yes. Some of the other things were weird mixes, steak pudding with corned beef hash shock ; battered fish, meat & potato pie, mushie peas shock meals in a can shock ; canned spaghetti on toast shock , I could go on.

Mind you, I could go a bundle on a gammon rasher and a few bangers or some good steak and kidney pudding. We always settled for mushy peas because that was what we got, but we didn't eat them. Now they seems to be considered good shock I am appalled.
omlette in a can??? :#

this pic cracked me up!

I remember the plate in the first picture. Was it the national crockery design for the 70s/80s (being a socialized state and all that clearly the government tells us what design we should have), an Argos Special one year or free with Shell petrol? Whichever way, almost everbody has it and it looked bloody awful then.
I think I still have it.

Well your cooking would persuade me to eat from one of those plates, but not much else.......

Shell petrol I think - that plate brought back some unpleasant memories.

/possibly too classy for Argos

When I was based up in Yorkshire, the first week they served up what I thought was hamburgers for lunch.

Sadly, it was black pudding and to me, quite vile.
When I was checking on line for something in the Farmers Cake thread, and I saw a recipe for faggots. I know the connotations, but does anyone else remember them?
The question was triggered "black pudding" references.
