This article seems to suggest that many of the Blacks that were evacuated to Houston will stay in Texas. Unlike Mexican immigrants Texas has to accept them.
They still insist on calling them refugees. Is New Orleans considered a foreign country?

refugee : One who flees in search of refuge.

Why wouldn't they call them refugees ?

I think the huge problem that some seem to have with the word "refugee" is the connotation associated with it....to the effect of people from third world countries fleeing religious, political, etc persecution. From what I've been reading, terming the folks who have evacuated from New Orleans a refugee adds to the anger that they seem somehow less American.

Generally I've always thought of a refugee as someone fleeing less than humane circumstances and sadly after seeing some of the images from New Orleans, I'd have to agree. It may be playing semantics to technically label those individuals "refugees" but I think right now, it seems a more apt description. They are no less human, however you term them, and deserve to be treated with dignity, something that's been lacking the past several days.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refugee

A refugee is a person seeking refuge (or asylum). In common usage, the word refers to a person seeking asylum in a foreign country in order to escape persecution. Those who seek refugee status are sometimes known as asylum seekers and the practice of accepting such refugees is that of offering political asylum. The most common asylum claims are based upon political and religious grounds.

How about the tag "illegal aliens", rather than immigrants by the US Govt, and some of it's citizens?
I just think America is too arrogant to accept some of its' citizens are refugees.
Refugee's conjures a dirty downtrodden people escaping one third world shithole to go to another third world shithole.

Only if you are not white

The USA Gov. should build them houses and find them jobs,in Texas or any other state nearby, like the UK Gov. did for it's citizens in WW2,as soon as possible.
Then George Bush would come out smelling of roses. lol

John, I remember them carefully taking walls of bomb damaged buildings down after WW2 because they couldn't get enough new bricks.
They couldn't get enough new bricks, because the industry wouldn't build new factories.
The industry wouldn't build new factories because the government wouldn't guarantee a duration for demand.

You be carefull what you say about texas boy .
After all its gods country and if you knock it to much he will come down from up above smite you and turn you to stone .

It could be worse...

Over 63,000 New Orleans residents have been flown to shelters in nine states throughout the country, including Texas, Arizona, Georgia and Utah. Many have no idea where they're going or when they'll return to New Orleans, if they return at all. The evacuees we met yesterday at Camp Williams in Draper, Utah said they didn't know they were being flown here until the plane took off from New Orleans. "Before we boarded the plane, they told us we were going to San Antonio," said 41-year-old Troy London. "When we were on the plane, they told us Utah."

/eek utah
