One more "pick " for president bush .
This is going to be tough for the Democratic Party. It was doing a fairly good job of demanding O'Connor's successor be very much like her. With Renquist's passing conservatives will deman the same. It's a safe bet this next pick by President Bush will satisfy the conservative Right. Oh yay.
Sorry for editing out the comment last night -I was too tired to word it coherently!

I haven't really been following this malarkey, so I wanted to ask why they couldn't replace him before he died? Is it like being pope -you still ought to be able to do the job even on your deathbed?

It's a job for life unless you resign. Renquist wouldn't.

I thought he was going to to give Bush a shot at replacing him, but he had his own kind of pride, and, Iv'e wondered whether he has trusted Bush recently because he has ruled against several administration positions.

I must say that C-Span's 24 hour coverage of Renquist's coffin lying in state is thrilling.

So here's my bet for the next nomination. Gonzales has it sewn up. Just an inkling.
