Hi, new here and its great to read the forums and see a lot of familiar thoughts. Ii have been in the US for almost six years now and still haven’t been back to England. Figured I would make one single post rather than spread a ton of posts at the same time as they are both food related. I found lamb! And so I want Mint sauce, found some information on the boards here but the recipes didn’t mention if it was malt vinegar or if it was some other kind of vinegar? With that out the way something has baffled me, here in VA the Chinese food seems very different, no prawn crackers (found them online to do my own) but the other dishes just do not have the same kind of taste i was used to at all, anyone else found any that seem pretty much the same? Just as a bit of background I was from Derbyshire.
Anyway.. Hi all and best wishes
Adam
They can be a bit gloppier here, and over complicated. Too many different things are thrown in. Thats my experience with take aways. Restaurants can be pretty authentic and many of them are really good.
What I'm used to calling chow mein, they call lo mein here. Chow Mein is the hard noodles which I'm not keen on but I keep on ordering it in error.
And I haven't found a decent egg foo yung here yet either. Some have been close to vile.
For a take away Magic Wok is actually one of the best ones, as long as you order something that isn't made already and they cook you a fresh one.
I love the chinese here, not the bland tasteless stuff they have over there.
I only eat the hot spicy stuff.
Never found Yuk Sung over here cry
Am not keen on the Chinese food you get in the States, and have had a few, in over 10 states. Why is it that the take aways always comes in that box, rather than a tin-foil plate?
no prawn crackers
Hi Adam,
try asking for shrimp chips. Not all restaurants/take aways do them but they should know what you mean if you ask for shrimp chips. They come in both white and pink rather than just white.
Otherwise, try and find a chinese supermarket. You can buy them in boxes and fry them up yourself :)
John doesn't like the Chinese food here. Says that something isn't right with the rice. I, on the other hand, love it! But, I haven't tried UK Chinese food yet.
You need to try the uk chinese food, the ones in China-Town london if you happen to be round there anytime.

If you mean the upright box with metal handles. You slip those out and bang the box in the microwave. Quite sensible really. Chinese cold is yukky
I remember ordering Chinese food back in England when I lived with my parents. The place was about 3 miles away so I went on my bike to pick it up.
Well, on the way back I got a flat tire so I had about 2 miles to walk, pushing the bike and carrying the food.
When I got home, my mother complained it was cold roll
Similar thing happened when I was biking back from college, 8 miles away, got a flat in the middle of Sherwood Forest, ended up pushing my bike about 5 miles down the A614. There was a phone box so I called home and she complained that I'd be late for tea! Women!

My question to you after reading all that, do you still bike?
