I'm at a loss...I really am. The choir of an Indianapolis church had a yard sale and raised $5,000 bail for the preacher's son, who had been arrested and jailed on charges of molesting the young sons of a former member of the congregation.

"She is evil. She has no kind of remorse toward her soul," the Rev. Paul Otis said. "I'm telling you, that girl, she (doesn't) even care for her own soul."
shock
I was confused, too, but at where the "girl" came in to it! Looking at the article, it appears it is the distraught mother. The rest makes perfect sense in their world of unreality.
Nothing amazes me about the hypocrisy and sickness of church doings over here. Before I came to the States, I was pretty neutral about Xtians. These days, I'm afraid I tar them all with the same brush. Wrong, I know! But it gets to you after a while.
Bit harsh ???
He's been charged but not convicted.
At this point nobody knows who did what.
If his church friends want to support him (and think him to be innocent) surely they can try to help. I think thats called 'being Christian'. - which is kinda what you expect from a group of Christians.
You can't really expect his Dad to be anything but supportive and beleive in his son. I see no hypocrisy here - just human nature.
Denial is not just a river in Egypt.
/you have to learn the difference between Christians (who on the whole lead quiet unassuming lives, do good work and don't get all up in your face about stuff) and Paulian Fundies who only pay lip service to the words of Jesus. Fundies are the ones who believe in supporting some profiteering warmonger who outsources to a chinese prison camp so they can get a "Support Our Troops" magnet for cheap, the ones who believe freedom of speech only applies to people they agree with, who think that by slapping the 10 commandments all over buildings that this will somehow make us a more peaceful and tolerant nation, who think Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11, and watch Faux News and listen to hate radio.

Yes, I know. And I feel guilty about feeling that way, so I suppose that's a good sign. Wouldn't say Phoenix was even in the real bible belt. But for every 10 professed Xtains I meet, I probably put 9 in my "I think you're a total idiot" category. Maybe the normal ones don't profess?
Living back in a highly Catholic and Lutheran country in Central Europe where the majority did church regularly, never thought this at all! But here they just irritate me!
I'll try not to repeat myself again - iffy connection today

It seems that 85% of evangelical christians vote for Bush. Your almost statiscally spot on!

Catholics are little more balanced (44 for Bush and 41 for Kerry).
Interesting considering they all read the same book (more or less)

So I now have statistics to back up my prejudices! Think I like this board!
Democrat/Labour-voting, non-fundie Christian here.
I would guess it is possible that the "former member" of the congregation, if she was a former member before this all happened, could have been trying to throw some dirt. Just a suggestion as an alternative angle of this story. Although the whole thing is a mess which only drags the rest of us in the dirt.
As a relatively new "active" Christian, I would say that...
Fundies who only pay lip service to the words of Jesus
...are the biggest problem for the less hypocritical Christians to deal with. Not atheists or pagans or buddhists or wiccans or muslims or any of the rest.
I like the German word for "hypocritical" (whose noun btw is Greek for "actor"). The Germans say "scheinheilig", which means "appearing to be holy" or "holy for the sake of appearance". I wish we had such a word. Faux-righteous is about as close to that term as I get.
roll I find it all abit of a double standard really, bet they were all over the catholic priests etc, but now its one of their own, they give the benefit of the doubt.
Again let it be investigated, then judged, thats something that does not happen really here. It's always those people over there that do those types of things, but turn a blind eye to when it happens on their side of the fence.
If they wanted to raise money for bail, I think everyone opening up their own wallets and chipping in would be more appropriate... The flea market idea is just wrong, in my opinion.

At least they didn't ask Michael Jackson to give a benefit concert - the have some decorum
I really don't care as long as they didn't break the law. The priest might want to resign for his comments, though. Turn the other cheek and forgiveness are clearly not foremost in his mind right now. It may be his son, but if you cannot practice what you preach, you've got no business preaching, no matter how hard the circumstances. imo
