Why is that conservatives who adhere to "original intent" with regards the Constitution - so there's nothing about abortion/privacy in it so it shouldn't be law - aspire to introduce amendments to ban gay marriage?

How is that a consistent train of thought?
I think "original intent" is kind of a bollocks concept because in the modern world, there is always going to be some interpretation required. They just use that term so they can get support for whatever they decide. I think the writers of the consititution kind of left it ambiguous in areas, firstly because they couldn't agree on specifics so compromised and secondly, because that leaves leeway for the future.
Some of the Founders are on record as regarding the Constitution as a "living document" meaning that it would be continually modified since they didn't know the future.

The strict constructionists regard it as "authoritative text" and that unless a right is spelled out, it doesn't exist.
