Why is it that the United States tends to win the same athletics events? Both men and women seem to dominate 100, 200, 400, and 800 metres (and now the US has the rather fantastic Meb Keflezighi at longer distances too.) But why should a nation of immigrants tend to win these things all the time? There are plenty of examples for other nations also for other things besides sports.
Bungle You should know why folks form other countires like mexico dont win at athletics .

I would imagine it's because the money and facilities are there to train top notch.

I think you have an answer there. In running, the sprints tend to be won by Americans, but middle distance runners from all over. Long distance runners seem to come mainly from Africa but before they came on the scene, the runners came from all over. The difference was that middle and long distance runners were older.

In the States, all of the facilities were in the universities so when a student graduated, they lost their facilities. in Europe, there are/were clubs where runners could train and there were competitions. The facilities were not as concentrated as in college so the Americans get the events for young athletes, the rest of the world gets the rest. I think the African runners are a special case, a product of natural selection, historically, they have covered large distances at a run. But that is for a different thread.

Attitude also. There's a greater store held in being a top class athlete. You're less likely to hear "Don't be silly, get a proper job". There's more sponsorship and scholarships available. There's more of an "if you try hard enough you can suceed at anything" belief and less knocking of those who try. My initial thoughts anyway.

Yep, and schools and uni's put more weighting on "sports" even allowing for some flexibility with classes and such (which used to tick Emily off when she taught at Uni here).

But I think this could apply to other forms of sport, such as motor racing too, most top level motor racing peeps have started at 5 or 6 years old (in karts for example) and eventually they hope to end up in F1/CHAMP/IRL and as such the level of schooling they have will suffer. So, unless they become a top level driver then ultimately they're going to suffer in the real world...

I thought it was pretty funny. But then I'm evil. twisted
In fact I think this should be in the Sports Forum...

;)
I thought it was funny too. Certainly not PC, but then again PCness has started to flood our society and strangle it.

We can all have a good laugh. Even at a Scotsman winning Wimbledon wearing a kilt. The problem comes when we don't understand the line between abusing someone and a simple one-off joke.

I'll take a joke from anyone.
