Hello peeps, does anyone know how to claim tax back in the UK. Leaving this green and pleasant land in Sept and someone said I should claim my tax back but I ain't got a clue where to start. Helppppppp ???
Why would you be due a tax refund? If you PAYE then it should be right, no?
/ignoramus regards...
Fill in a tax form? You can ask to have the tax repaid to you or applied to the next year's taxes.
Alternatively, you can write to or phone your tax office, but I think you have to wait until the close of the tax year for this.
If anybody leaves the country before the end of the current tax year they are entitled to claim a tax refund, the refund can be quite a sizable sum, depending on how much has been paid.
Never mind. Do what Ameriscot says.
I worked for one month of the UK tax year last year and I got a refund of 450 pounds.
There is something called a 'Short Form' for expats types to fill out. The tax office of your last UK employer is the best place to start -they are always very helpful. Talk to soemone in your 'old' account dept.
I left the UK in January and got a tax refund of about 1600 quid. Nice. I just rang up the local office and they sent me a simple form out. It was in my bank within a couple of weeks of the telephone call.
You only get a significant refund if your annual salary puts you in the 40% bracket of tax. If you leave at a point in a tax year before your pay to date has reached the 40% bracket you will get the money that you paid at the 40% rate back again (minus the amount paid at 25%).
Mine was high because I paid a fortune in tax for a company car, pretty well all of it was at 40% therefore I got most of it back when I left the country.
OMG... I had no idea. I've been in this country for 6 eyars now. Can I still do it?
And I know this may sound dunb but how do I find my local tax office?
Here ya go. smile

UK Queen.....I also had no idea!
I think the limit for claims is seven years after the fact so if you get the forms now and send them back PDQ then all should be well.
We have been here 5 and 4 1/2 years now (Mike came here 6 months before Lucy and I ), and I can't recall us having had a tax refund.
I'm definitely going to look into this!
Thanks daveslaguna!
