So I wake up this morning after a long lie-in, and TnS has been busy in the kitchen. She read the back of a can of Bush's baked beans, and made some without the molasses and junk, Heinz style.
This is a woman who is not often seen in the kitchen. I'm the main cook in the house.
She said "If I'd known it was this easy to make, I would have made them a long time ago".
We'd bought some Colman's yesterday at Wayne's Deli here in Muskegon. She took a can of Northern Beans, added a dash of Colman's, some garlic and onion powder, sage, seasoned salt, Hungarian paprika, and a small can of tomato sauce. It was a little over-spiced in the end but the flavour was pretty close! I think the only thing that would get it closer would be if we used dried beans rather than canned.

I've got the best wife in the world.
Don't we all
If you have a World Market in your area they sell Heinz Baked Beans way cheaper than any Brit food store......I bought 6 cans for just over $7.50
They also stock alot of British and Indian foods way cheaper than I have found anywhere else.
Hubby and I just love a curry on Friday nights........... grin
My nearest World Market is a 40 mile drive away. That's almost 4 gallons of petrol = $10. Got to buy a lot of beans for that drive to be worth it. Once I start working out there again I'll pick them up.
I still think TnS Baked Beans taste good.
What does TnS stand for? Glad you like yer wifes beans. Makes for a happy marriage.

We just had a world market open up in town. I've not been there yet though.

Yeah what does TnS beans stand for???
I've never heard of them.............
lol Well Texas has a bunch of stores that sell English food. I do not have to make any special trips. But having said that they have been out of Mint Sauce to go with my lamb. So may have to make a special trip some where lol

Trouble and Strife   "wife"
Here in NJ, I've found that most branches of A&P and Stop & Shop have a small British/Irish food section where you can pick up proper Heinz baked beans, as well as some other stuff, mostly sweets, Cup-A-Soups and tea. I have yet to find somewhere that sells proper McVitie's Jaffa Cakes though. Just as well I brought over 6 packets. 8)
Meijer in the midwest started carrying real Jaffa Cakes. The prices in their "ethnic aisles" went up about 25% in the last few weeks though! They do sell Heinz and C&B baked beans, although both are now in the $1.70 per can range. Heinz Tomato Soup, another big fave of mine, is now close to $3 a can.
I found Heinz baked beans in Albertsons, if you have those where you are.
Although I haven't ried them yet, hubby assures me their Pork and Beans, or the vegetarian baked beans taste very similar.
I buy the Heinz vegetarian beans and like them a lot.
I couldn't say if they are like Brit beans or not.
I do seem to remember that Brit beans are not mushy which the veggie beans are and the sauce is very thick not runny
We bought some heinz baked beans in a world market here in Wilmington, and, after nearly ten months eating Bush's Vegetarian baked beans, I have to say that I prefer them over heinz - Made the mistake of buying the ones with a big chunk of lard in one time and nearly chundered, but my vote goes to the veg. beans. Great taste, not too sweet and not drowning in sauce either..My wife still can't understand why you put them on toast before eating them though.
Anyone know the answer to that?
