Trying the Hovis recipe in the bread machine, will report how it turned out.
Just had me supper!! Had a Chip Buttie, using a slice of HOVIS bread and marge!

Hmmmmm so good..I mean Hovis Bread I would give 9/10...the BEST most expensive Bread in this CITY I would give 4/10......
The bread machine Hovis turned out a disaster. It was too dry! I halved the recipe and there's no way that a cup of milk was going to be enough for 1 1/4 cups of flour plus all the wheatgerm and bran. I found myself adding dribbles of milk into the breadmaker while it was mixing just to get the dough to stop being crumbs.

As the expensive ingredients are not used too much, I might experiment with varying amounts of milk. The resulting bread tastes like Hovis that's for sure. But it is so dry!
I sliced up what was sliceable and spread some butter on it. Now *that* tastes like Hovis!

I think I may have used the milk wrongly. I looked up the technique "scalding milk" on Google:

Time to try another loaf I think.
The next attempt came out better.

Hey, try this when you want a tasty wheat loaf

Using a standard bread machine recipe for a half-wholewheat bread, substitute 1/4 of the flour for a mixture of All-Bran and wheatgerm.

Came out gorgeous! That's a slice I can eat with nothing but butter on it.
How much to bread makers cost and where can I get one in the US???

I would quite like to give this all a whirl for some *decent* bread for a change.....

Karen breadmakers are available in almost any department store from Wal-mart to Macy's. They will run anything from about $40 up to a couple of hundred depending on the style and features you want.
Make sure you get a decent sized one. Ours is 2lb and that is not a very big loaf! Big in weight, compared to the sliced junk, but not when you look at it.
i thought i would keep this post alive and see if anyone has any updates on it as this post has been dead for sometime,
