My dad told me that they sang "Pass the Lord and praise the ammunition"
He was wounded at the Anzio beachhead and spent a lot of time in hospital while they tried to save his leg. They had their own words to Lily Marlene but I can only remember fragments
The chorus went
We are the D Day dodgers, the lads who dodged D Day
bits of verse
We landed at Salerno, a holiday with pay
Gerry brought the band out to cheer us on our way
Oh lovely Lady Aster, why make such a fuss,
your lovely mouth is open far too much
I can't remember any more but I'm sure you get the idea.
