Sadly he died today.

I watched Countdown most days when I got home from school back in blighty and always loved catching it when I go home . He always had a cheesy wit that was somehow ok.

RIP

That is a sad sad story, the man we all loved to watch on tv, with his co-partner Carol Voderman. He was always the gentleman, even when Carol is taking the piss out of him, of his tie collection.

May his soul rest in peace !

I remember watching him on Calendar as a kid - the ferret will stay with me forever.

How sad. cry
shame, nice, harmless bloke. Not many of them around.
Awwww....I liken him an'all....I still watched countdown with my mum when I went home to visit.(
Just been listening to all the tributes on the BBC site. Very sad. I remember watching Channel 4 bursting onto our screens with its maiden broadcast of Countdown through what looked like a snowstorm in the telly. We lived in a river valley and couldn't pick up the direct signal for Channel 4 for another couple of years until a relay was put in. I watched Countdown almost continuously until moving over here. Lucy enjoyed it too and would try and make up little words...she loved the "Richard and Carol Show"! D

Wonder if they will continue doing the show with a different presenter?

I was never any good at the word part (I always take a long time playing Scrabble) but watched it only to do the numbers game. Sad loss.
It won't be the same with someone else, and can't really see anyone that will have the same rapport with Carol ( isn't she lovely ).

Yeah, I remember that too. It was something that always came up when they were showing old clips as well. He was just so polite when that ferret was biting into his finger.

Very sad :(

I used to love Countown. I'd watch it when it was o of an afternoon or I used to tape it or watch the early showing of it on Channel 4. I loved the word rounds but in particular I loved the numbers round. For someone like myself, a self confessed maths bimbo I loved trying to get the number. As shows go it was possibly my favourite game show Ive ever seen and thats up against shows like Bullseye wink

I was out today and I got a message that my mother called to tell me that someone who I liked from TV had died, so I just found out and its just kind of sinking in.... (
Fair play to Richard Whitely, he did a great job and was just such a great sport, he took some schtick but he was a fine fella. He did a great job with Carol Vorderman. I still miss Countdown but I'll miss Richard Whitely even more. (
Never did see that show it was after my time in UK sorry about the loss though .
