US drugs regulators have approved a heart failure drug specifically for treating black patients.
The Food and Drug Administration gave BiDil the go-ahead after tests found it cut by 43% deaths in heart patients who identified themselves as black.
The FDA says the drug is a step towards the promise of tailored medicine.
But critics say there are no biological differences between ethnic groups and the move is more about making money than helping patients.

IF TESTS have proven it most effective in curing a certain ethnic race why not use it ??? any help that stops the early death of humans cuased by heart desease is a step forward
They may have approved this and critics say we're all the same, but they've already banned some of the statin drugs for certain ethnic groups due to the small percentage risk of heart attack suddenly becoming an extremely large percentage. Can't remember the name of the drug but it's a cheaper version of lipitor, and definitely not for anyone with an ancestry including China, Japan, and all the smaller islands over there, not to mention Hawaii. So if it works in banning, surely it works in affirming.
The not too distant future should see everyone getting a compounded medicine, made to measure. One size never fits all.
annie, I agree. We are all different and sometimes need special drug treatment.
I was speaking to an elderly nieghbour this morning. His wife of 82 went into hospital 3 weeks ago for a colon cancer op and developed Pnemonia, something that older people often end up with when bed ridden.
She was close to death but due to dedicated staff working with a variety of drugs she appears to be out of danger and for the first time in 3 weeks she was able to walk on her own yesterday.
Again I emphasize, we are all different and that isn't only race.
As was stated in a previous s post we not ( all the same) but the silly over sensative pc/ civil rights crowd make everything a race issue ,.
because someone is considered "differant to another by reason of race and treated differant regarding health issues DOES NOT MEAN discrimination .
if the treatment offered is to ' prolong" there life and not prematurely end it
iinfact the very idea that tests have been taken to verify the fact the differant eithnic groups respond to differant drugs and treatment shows the dedication of the drug industries to find a cure for ALL HUMANS REGARDLESS of race .
Discrimination in my mind would have been to ignore the results of the tests regarding African Americans and concentrating on finding a cure for coucasions only.

Preaching to the choir here JohnA, you have to remember heart surgery research was only done on men for yonks and yonks, which lead to the dreadful discovery that women have smaller arteries and veins and the implements they were using both to operate and replace faulty bits were unusable on women.
