My wife, daughter (3) and I are considering moving to NY with my job. Has anyone got any advice on where we should live? Ideally need to rent a house with min 3 bedrooms and some sort of garden. Therefore thinking of NJ, Staten Island or NY (not manhattan).

Working in Manhattan so do not want massive commute and want to live in a decent area.

Thoughts anyone?
How far do you want to commute? We are approx. an hour from Manhattan by train which arrives at Penn Station, on Long Island.

Do you need schools (as in, will you be staying here long enough for your daughter to be going to school therefore need to take that into account also)? How much in rent are you prepared to pay? Renting a house around here (and where we used to live in NJ) for the size of property you mention will be around the $3,000 mark. Could even be higher depending on the position of the property etc.

Both NJ and NYstate are good for families, depending on what you like and what is important to you. Sometimes it would be better to list your priorities and also where you will be working, then figure out the best places to commute from. the one thing that is not good about NJ and NY is the traffic!

)
not sure where i will be working yet. Probably in financial district. Will be around for 2-4 yrs so long term schools not an issue. Appreciate the rent issue.

Therefore need somewhere with c 30 mins communute ideally to financial district or midtown. Could go for longer commute if the trade off is better area/community etc Needs to have stuff for small kids and reasonable schoold (kidergarten etc). Want reasonable house with garden and a decent community for wife and daughter to meet people etc.

Any areas worth considering?
My son is just starting with the IMF in Washington ( Mon 27 June) and over the last 3 months has been going through what you are facing. He is going for a 2 to 4 year contract.

Fortunately we only live an 8 hour drive from Washington and his wife spent a week in the Washington area checking out houses and schools. If either of you could do the same for your New York move, it would be worth considering.

There is no subsitute for first hand information.

I'm a British lawyer and there's a good possibility that I'm going to be offered a job in NYC. In terms of living, we'd be looking at Westchester.

My wife is from a very close family and she's never lived outside of her 'comfort zone' .... effectively she's lived in the same area her whole life.

She's worried about moving to New York and not knowing anyone, not fitting in and other related issues, and i'm terribly, terribly worried about how she'll cope.

If possible i'm looking to contact a few women who've moved out to the USA, particularly NY who can relate their experiences to my wife directly, and also possibly so that if we do move decide to make the move, she'll at least know someone in the USA when we arrive.

I know that it's a big ask, but if anyone can help then i'd very much appreciate it.

If you can help then i'd very much appreciate hearing from you.
I'm just on Long Island which is about an hour from Westchester so isn't that far away. Can do it in less depending on the traffic )

I came over with my husband and 3 children nearly 7 years ago so can understand your wife's anxiety. Please feel free to PM me to either just make contact or to ask questions )
I suggest she look into joining a Women's Club and also Daughters of the British Empire who are very active in the NYC area.
