It's already being pushed by Military Recruiters in your local High School.

And my son is actively protesting it too.
If I get out of this country before 2008, which I think is likely, I will not be getting citizenship for that very reason.
Hopefully it wont happen ,in times of strong military action the draft is always on the mind of congress .

it would have to be approved by a majority of the house ( not a simple majority )and is sure to cause many a elected offical to think deeply about where he or she is at .

the last draft was inacted in the veitman war era by president lydon johnson and ended in 1975 by the then president richard nixon .

So there you have it democrats inacted the draft republicans ended it ......

president reagan bought back the manditory registration in 1980 so it seems both parties have a interest in forced/compulsary service in time of military activity .

I noticed last week that the entry level requirements for officers has been relaxed considerably and the bonuses offered (bribes) to enlist are increasing.

Frankly, this all-volunteer army is wonderful while people think it is a fair deal but how much is your life or that of your children really worth?

I think it has been easy to gloss over this, with talk of fighting the terrorists over there and not here but almost weekly now, they are losing handfulls of soldiers and having to admit that the insurgents are as strong as they have ever been.

Anyway, they should have plenty of folks to volunteer before a draft is needed - they have those yellow ribbons on their cars.

Bad news, E17; whether you're a US citizen or not, legal permanent residents between the ages of 18 through 25 are required to register for Selective Service.

http://www.sss.gov/FSwho.htm

[quote]"Registration is the law. A man who fails to register may, if prosecuted and convicted, face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years."[end quote]

and, unbelievably:

[quote]"Almost all other male noncitizens are required to register, including illegal aliens......"[end quote]

EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE WAR ....
In part, the war was a legacy of France's colonial rule, which ended in 1954 with the French army's catastrophic defeat at Dienbienphu and the acceptance of the Geneva Conference agreements (see Vietnam). Elections scheduled for 1956 in South Vietnam for the reunification of Vietnam were canceled by President Ngo Dinh Diem. His action was denounced by Ho Chi Minh, since the Communists had expected to benefit from them. After 1956, Diem's government faced increasingly serious opposition from the Viet Cong, insurgents aided by North Vietnam. The Viet Cong became masters of the guerrilla tactics of North Vietnam's Vo Nguyen Giap. Diem's army received U.S. ADVICE AND AID but was unable to suppress the guerrillas, who established a political organization, the National Liberation Front (NLF) in 1960.
