Well just the other day my Employment Authorization Card arrived from Department of Homeland Security. Came with a very brief letter that said I can use it to look for work in the USA. Problem is I still don't understand the situation regarding SS numbers. Can't seem to find out the correct information. Do I need to get an SS number before I can take up work and if so how? Or can I now look for work with this card? Tried registering with a Job site and would you believe it, they wanted my Social Security number first! Anyone know anything about this? -?
This is long ago, in my distant past but I recall that literally the day after I got my EAD, I tripped down to the local Social Security office, took a number and then was issued a SSN when I produced my EAD.
If I were you, I would find my local office in the phone book and then go down there with card in hand. Once you have that number, a whole world opens up before you (or something like that....)
Best of luck with your job search.
Hmmm I'll give that a try early next week then. Would help if they bothered giving out an explanation of what to do next. lol
Sounds about right Pilgrim.
You Definitely need to get down to the local SS office.

Go to your SS office. If they're any good, you will have a SS# the same day.
I know this is a little off the question, but my kids were not given a SS# here, they had a ITIN# for tax purposes. When my husbands' bosses wife came here 6mths after us she was given the same treatment, no SS# just the tax id #. Now my son wants to work and we have our green cards, do I just need to try again? The social here in our town works rather like the DMV, depends who you get, and whether they want to nice that day roll
I think I got some temporary thing but was then sent the SS card in the mail with the right number on it. Memory's a bit fuzzy though. Ask at your local office if there is anyone who has dealt with EA cards and the like.

They should be able to get an SS# now they have their green cards, so yes, just try again, should be straightforward.

Yes, that's what I recall too. Got the number issued on a temporary bit of paper and then the card came in the mail a week or two later.
It's a bit ghetto third world though (bit of flimsy paper), compared to the plastic, National Insurance card you get in the first world of the UK.
My NI number was printed on a manilla coloured card and came complete with a set of instructions. Same for my Medical Number.
I still have both. Do I win a prize?????

Mine too, and I know it's around here somewhere.
I have mine too, but my NI card is a red and blue credit-card type thing. I was so proud of it at the time roll

So why if they already issue insurance cards that way and presumably everyone has said card do they need to start up a national ID card system? :-?
Not asking Monster in particular, just using her comment on the credit card type NI card
NFI -but there's no picture on an NI card.

It would be easier to replace them with one than starting up a whole new system no?
Not that I care it seems to me they are trying to introduce a system that hey think exists here but in reality does not.
