Hello!
Next thursday, 16th June, Im emmigrating to the USA where I will be marrying my American fiancee on July 30th. However, Im really worried about insurance- health, car, and travel insurance!!
My fiancee says that I will be covered under her health plan when we get married on July 30th but am not sure what to do for the 6/7 weeks when I will be out in the USA before the wedding. Ive contacted several British car insurance groups and they said they wont be able to insure me as its overseas, so does anyone know if American car insurance firms will be able to insure me instantly because I have a car waiting for me in America and need to be able to drive straight away!! Will I need to become an American citizen or be married before being able to get insurance?

Well Ive confused myself enough over this post so hopefully you guys wont be too confused! Any advice/help would be most appreciated!!
thanks
Carl D
I would think you would be able to get insurance. There's no citizenship or residency requirement to my knowledge. Only hitch might be they would not have any established driving record for you so it could be pricey. Also, you are going to need to get your state driving license as soon as possible as they are probably not going to want you to just have a british one or an international one. You'd need to get a drivers license ("drivers" not "driving" over here) as soon as you can anyway as it is something you'll need to carry for all sorts of purposes.

Contact some US insurers active in the state you are going to be in -- look at the biggies, GEICO, State Farm, etc. -- your finance will know. Actually, come to think of it, see if you can be added to her existing insurance (definitely as possibility after you are married).

One thing -- DO make sure you get some sort of insurance. It's illegal to drive without it pretty much everywhere in the US.

Welcome. Hope you stay active on the board.
Auto Owners are pretty good, find a local agent that carries them. My MIL is an insurance agent, if you have any problems drop me a line and I'll put you in touch.
Make sure, by the way, that you do it in the state where you are going to be living. Insurance here is state regulated and some carriers, even big ones, don't operate in every state. (For example, I had to change carriers when I moved to Texas, even though I was previosly with one of the biggest carriers in Cali.)

The whole state regulation/federal regulation will be a nuance that you will have the pleasure of figuring out when you get here!
