Anyone else noticed that the above mentioned countries are both slagging off Amnesty International.

Kind of icky to think Georgie boy is joining with Mugabe, wonder if the gov. have thought of how it looks!?
What has really depressed me about this whole affair is how the Republican press have just dismissed Amnesty out of hand. They have completely scrubbed them of any legitimacy before even addressing the charge. The tack used is to compare the Gulag with Gitmo. So millions versus "the 400 at Gitmo" as it was mentioned on the radio. So of course it looks like a stupid thing to say. But the Amnesty report doesn't do that. It cites the 39 secret prisons the US has worldwide in which prisoners are kept without due process, without any protection from the Geneva convention or even US Constitutional law. Take this Rumsfeld quote after the report in defending against the Amnesty charge - "To date there have been approximately 370 criminal investigations into the charges of misconduct involving detainees" since Sept. 11, 2001. That's supposed to be a good defense!! 370 charges of misconduct, a whitewash at Abu Ghraib, 350 people released without any charges from Gitmo - many of them children - and yet most of the Republican press is entirely nonchalant about this. This is one of the things that pushed me away. Disgusting.

I suppose I should say that Amnesty doesn't actually use the word Gulag in its report. Irene Khan, the General Secretary of Amnesty International did say it at the press launch, but that isn't the same thing.
Are you saying george and mugabe, aren't the same person? o
I sometimes have problems with Amnesty's overall objectivity and I don't agree with all their mandates, but this U.S administration seems to love brandishing reports by Amnesty when it's taking North Korea or Cuba to task, but completely rubbish its credibility when it gets too close to home. You can't have it both ways.
Ala........you can't have your cake and eat it? That is such a cliche' D
