Who's REALLY the biggest artist of all time?

This week is a very exciting week for rock’n’roll anoraks. For a start, the new Guinness Book Of British Hit Singles & Albums is out, ensuring the 6 Music office need never argue about whether The Levellers’ One Way was a Top 40 hit or not ever again.

But it also attempts to answer the question that has vexed mankind since The Beatles deposed Elvis as the Kings Of Rock’n’Roll ie Who is the biggest artist of all time? The book draws the not unreasonable conclusion that it was Elvis, but it’s basing its answer solely on the number of weeks spent in the UK album and singles chart, which doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.

So please, nominate your favourite band now. Although if you can make a convincing claim for Shed Seven, I’ll eat my anorak.

Wow, I remember having one of those. I always wished they had an online version or at least a purchasable database that could be searched through for whatever you want: Like songs released in 1981, the greatest year of music in history. I would love to make a compilation of songs from that year but I know I would be leaving off a lot of good songs.

I know there's still illegal P2P out there, but does anyone have Napster or iTunes? Are you able to search for release date successfully?

Geezer......hmmmmm, 1981 being the greatest year in music? As much as I love the 80s, and am a big fan and listening to songs from that era now in my car, I'll have to say later yrs had a lot to offer too.

I'll love to see your list though, and hopefully someone will come up with a database of songs. On the whole P2P issue, another judge has just said P2P is legal for now in Canada D
