Hi Everyone,
I am now a fully fledged citizen, had my interview today and 1 1/2 hrs later swore the oath
I'd apply for citizenship if I didn't have to swear my allegiance to this place... anyone else of the same inclination?
just starting my long road in the immigration process i personally would have thought swearing an oath is a small price to pay for the rewards to be reaped [especially if you can hold dual passports?]. roll
It makes sense to get it whilst you are there, even if you plan to move back to blighty, as you never know what can happen down the roads. It also gives you hassle free entrance into the country with those ignorant customs at the gate roll
I'd apply for citizenship if I didn't have to swear my allegiance to this place...
I had my fingers crossed when I said it so it didn't count...

In the eyes of many back home, just coming here makes you a traitor. Why not go for something that makes life easier.
And you still retain your old citizenship.
I'll probably get around to it later this year. I've been eligble for several months but it doesn't seem as important now as it did a while back.
Anyway, I want to get one of those surplus M1 Garand Rifles that Congress lets you buy through the Civilian Marksmanship Program and citizenship is one of the pre-requisites.
Its not a decision I have to make for a while yet and I really don't know if I will be bothered to.
However I would have less problem with the US Oath than I would swearing allegiance to the Crown in the UK - something I'm fundamentally opposed to.
Its worth remembering that when you swear allegiance, you do so to the country, its institutions, democracy and the constitution. You are not swearing allegiance to the Monkey napping in the oval office but the process that put him there.
Of course if you want to participate in that process, you have to become part of it.

Exactly right, if I am asked my opinion I give it, but rarely volunteer it because this is not my country. I am too committed to the UK and at the moment do not feel like I could swear allegiance to the US whether that is false allegiance or true... I just can't stand this place :D

But 'this is the best country in the world' and 'you're so lucky to be here'.... :D

Then move to someplace else in the States. I got fed up with living in the Midwest surrounded by web-footed inbred corn-fed bumpkins so I moved.
/much happier in this part of the US.
//would become a citizen if I didn't have to answer dumb questions like "what are the three colors on the flag?"
