o You can now sign up for 15 months to join the armed forces, then you do 4 yrs of national guard.

So how far does it go before they bring back a draft?? There has been alot of bad press about the way they are getting people to join up, plus not meeting set targets.

During the election they said they would not bring back the draft, but hell GB is not running again, so why not. Just get it over and done with, without this pulling teeth mentality.

Is it, Isn't it and if so when ???

I think give it another 6/9 months.
doesnt look like it will happen as they are closing some bases ,and have no plans for increasing US forces stationed in foreigh lands

To take effect it has to be voted and approved on by the house and senate .
8) I hear wgat you say John. But I am still confused how the national guard got sent over there. I always thought they were only mobilsed to defend the home land, you know like dads army. So they got to travel, plus if they want to kick something else off. And I am not so sure there will be a whole lot of International backing, even from the UK.
The local news channel have been running a series of investigations into recruitment. You know the kind of thing. The recruitment officer shows you how to get a fake diploma, lose your drug bust, all that kind of stuff.
I only had half an ear on it the other day but apparently there's some very small print at the bottom of the 15month/4 year contract that allows them to hold you for a lot longer. They're only guaranteeing you will be away for 15 months at a time, not as some poor sods have been, since the start of the war. Rotation hasn't always worked, and has been repeated time and again for some ranks.
So yes, if they need to, I can see a draft, the recruitment has fallen for the 3rd or 4th month in a row. people are wise-ing up and not going, after all, more people are dying now and the conflict is officially over! -?

Oh how funny. Our local news channel has been doing the same thing. Wonder if it's a nationwide problem?

Which means you get to stay there until you get shot. And then smuggled back under cover of darkness. And then you have to pay for your meals while you're in hospital.

/can anyone say "stop-loss orders"?

Part of me says they won't do a draft because they know how politically unpopular it will be. Instead they'll just scale back operations because that would be easier to justify. The other part of me thinks that they don't care what they do because Bush can't run for a third time so they aren't accountable anymore....none of his cronies can really be sure of the same job under a new pres anyway.
Cant see tha draft policy working overseas either. Bush made alot of this being a democracy and an armed force where people have a choice to join it and fight for freedom ( roll ) running against the forced axis of evil. It would be a propaganda tool for US foes if it did happen and also signal US intensions to go to war with the world.
They don't need the draft.

1) Dubya's got the economy by the balls, squeezed so tight people are turning into dog whistles.

2) Check out the job ads. The army, navy, etc., are all recruiting covertly Come and learn your trade with us, call 1-800-432-8765 or whatever. Only if you google the number or call it do you find out that it is the armed forces. People will go there in desperation of getting a paycheck and learning a trade.
I think the CW is that there is no way they will be bringing back the draft. Bush may be a lame duck, but it would have to get by Congress and most of them think they have political futures - some of them in Bush's job (long vacations, free flights, regular naps - you can see the attraction).

However if there was another attack on the USA on a scale like 9/11 then all bets are off as the Americans will pretty much roll over for anything in the name of patriotism.

Also, if there wassome major military requirement - Korea for example - then they might not have a choice, give the current overstretch.

....Sixty two million voted to re-elect President Bush.Should not they be lining up in droves to enlist?
Re Goose's question about the National Guard. They have actually been involved in all of the the US military action, eg, 138,000 of them were mobilized for the Korean War and loads were in the first Gulf war and Vietnam (and WWII).

The whole 15 months thing is a bit of a farce if you have to be in the Guard for the next 4 years -- I suppose at least to get to have a slightly different uniform on which to collect different varieties of Middle Eastern sand.

Should certainly be where any drafting begins... MUAH HAH HAH HAHHHH!

You want war, you got it pal!

Although the sixty million would be reduced down to about 10 million once you take out all the oldies.

And that's the biggie, the 'what if', especially regarding Korea. Regardless of how unpopular bringing back the Draft would be, if push came to shove I can't see any alternative. :(
