i just applied for a US passport after taking the oath last week. does anyone know if i can leave and come back to the US on a british passport (in case my US passport doesn't come through in time)?

i'm dying to quit my job and bugger off to thailand for a couple of months -)

thanks!
I know USCs are required to leave and re-enter the US using their American passport. I don't know if any leeway is granted for newly ordained citizens, but somehow I doubt it. Sorry to be all but useless. Good luck in getting it back in time so it becomes a non-issue )
I would think if you no longer have your Green card that you would not be allowed to use your Brit passport to leave and re-enter the US.
Good point.
You cannot use your UK passport to enter the US if you are a citizen. They expect you to use your US passport because as far as they are concerned, you are American and nothing else.

When I just went, I took both passports. I used my British one to enter the UK but had them staqmp the US one jsut in case. That way I get to go through the quick line both ends D
You are guaranteed your passport in something like 6 weeks, less if you use premium processing. I think it is best to wait for your passport and to not have to worry about it.

.....but the point is she doesn't have her US passport yet....

Yeah, wait for it to come through otherwise you will have issues getting back in without your passport on a brit passport.

go to Thailand on a UK passport
apply at the US embassy for a new passport in Bangkok
spend your couple of months in Thailand.
come home on US passport.

god that was easy.

I don't think you can have two passport applications in at once, can you?

Both the British and American Passport agencies require that you send in all your current passports with your applications, so in normal situations you'd have to wait for one passport to be issued before applying for the other.

But the OP states that she has applied for her US passport and implies that she still has her British one as she wants to travel on it.

The two applications would both be for the American passport -the one already sent and the one manc proposed she make in Thailand.
ok so lets imagine the scenario.

in Thailand wanting to get back into the USA with no US passport.

you walk into the US Embassy.

are they gonna turn you away or are they gonna help you?

can someone check your mail at home and send you said passport?

not really. you use passports to enter countries

not to leave them.

Whilst I acknowledge you are to use US passport on US Soil. you do not show your passport to the USCIS when leaving the USA at an airport.

You do use it as official picture ID for the airlines at check in. But it is not illegal to show a foreign passport to an airline employee as it is the same to do so to an USCIS employee.
