Hey Guys,

Just wondered how I renew my British Passport as its about to run out in May? I have been living here for less than a year and have a green card?

How and where do I go or do to renew it? if anyone has any links to anything that would be great!
I renewed mine via the British Embassy in Washington D.C http//www.britainusa.com/consular/other_show.asp?SarticleType=25&Other_ID=205

Took about 2 weeks.

Yup that's where they're all done. Just download the forms, fill them out and mail them with all your stuff
That's a firm, wonderful service, less than 2 weeks. I think it was about $110 I cannot be sure.
EEB, Wendy, Adeshell - did you need your pics countersigned? My passport expires in August but I want to renew it now rather than wait till nearer the expiry date.
I had my next door neighbour(at the time) sign mine as she was a school teacher.

You can get your doctor, lawyer etc. to sign for you.
I got my boss to sign it. Simple as that.
Thanks guys. D
Hey I was just wondering, how long can I be out of the US for at a time? I have my green card?
Up to a year
and is there a certain amount of time I have to be in the U.S at one time in a year?
This should answer most of your questions.

International Travel
A Permanent Resident of the United States can travel freely outside of the US. A passport from the country of citizenship is normally all that is needed. To reenter the US a Permanent Resident normally needs to present the green card (Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551) for readmission. A reentry permit is needed for reentry for trips greater than one year but less than two years in duration.

You can find more information about travel documents from "How Do I Get a Travel Document?"

Maintaining Permanent Residence
Maintaining Permanent Residence You may lose your permanent residence status if you commit an act that makes you removable from the United States under the law in section 237 of the Immigration and Nationality Act. If you commit such an act, you may be brought before the immigration courts to determine your right to remain a Permanent Resident.

You may be found to have abandoned your permanent resident status if you

* Move to another country intending to live there permanently.
* Remain outside of the US for more than one year without obtaining a reentry permit or returning resident visa. However in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the US may be considered, even if it is less than one year.
* Remain outside of the US for more than two years after issuance of a reentry permit without obtaining a returning resident visa. However in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the US may be considered, even if it is less than one year.
* Fail to file income tax returns while living outside of the US for any period.
* Declare yourself a “nonimmigrant” on your tax returns.

Notes for Form BNO-A
If you are unable to produce your Hong Kong identity card, please complete the attached forms and enclose with your BNO-A application
You do not keep the same passport when you "renew" it. Yes you use that form. iirc there is a space for your old passport number on it.
OK, DO I need to send in my old Passport with my application?
