Now he was a very funny man. One of my all-time favourites. Like marmite, I loved to watch him when I was growing up - he was quite unique. I wonder if there are any dvd's of any of his shows. I'd like to see some of those old ones again.
(Has anyone noticed that we both said "to watch" instead of "watching"? Are we becoming Americans???)

Is it an Americanism?

The beeb are rerunning the Sit down Stand up in tribute to Dave Allen, it's quite good, especially his story of how he lost his finger D

I loved watching Dave Allen At Large on the BBC when I was a kid. You know its ironical to me that I loved watching his sketches when I was young but when I was older I was just absorbed by some of his observations of life in his stand up (or sat down with a whiskey wink ) I think it was someone like Ben Elton who said that Dave Allen was probably the first 'alternative comedian' now, it just seems the norm. I'll miss Dave Allen (

I had completely forgotten about him, but once I saw the picture remember him completely. Very funny guy. Funny that he was thought of as controversial -- I always say him as a very natural and down to earth everyman, not some sort of Lenny Bruce wildman of comedy.
Also funny how now having a drink and ciggie on stage would probably be the most controversial aspect of all.

I've put this on a thread before, but it bears repeating' my favourite Dave Allen joke.
One day a little Catholic boy wanders into Ian Paisley's church.
The reverend himself comes out and walks op to the little boy.
"What do you want?" he thunders.
"I've come to church to talk to God." replies the little boy.
"Are you a Protestant or Catholic lad?" bellows Paisley. (I wish you could hear the voices as Allen did them.)
"I'm Roman Catholic." the little boy says proudly.
At this, Paisley turns purple, points his finger at the boy and belllows
"The get out of my church you little heathen!"
Shocked and terrified the boy runs out of the church.
Once back outside, he sits on a wall and cries.
But suddenly, a light appears on the horizon and behold, God himself appears to the little boy.
"My child." says God "Why are you crying?"
"Well," sniffs the child "All I was trying to do was get into Ian Paisley's church."
"Oh don't worry about that" says God "I've been trying to get into there for years."

yes very sad, i've always liked dave allen even though he pre-dates me somewhat
i bought my dad a video a few years ago that was just hilarious
i'm certainly not allergic to profanity (far the f*ck from it) but i loved his ability to bring solid observational comedy to mainstream audiences without the need to validate his humor with profanity, back in the day
