"To vote for this bill would be a vote for character, to uplift your community and to do something good not only for the state of Virginia, but for this entire country,"

As opposed to say sopending legislative time a money of improving education, housing and ensuring access to healthcare.

Someone should ship these morons of to Iraq to get their head lopped off in the hope that the next generation of politicians finds something more constructive to do with our taxes. :D

The job of government is to respond to the society that exists, not to shape society in its own image if there are bits that it doesn't like.

This country is so right wing it makes me want to puke.

Exactly right eastendboy ..

So why then are the left bent on passing a gay marriage law when poll after poll even in liberal states comes back with the result that MOST americans dont want it ???

And why do they want to ban guns when the majority of americans think ecxisting laws are sufficent ???

Those two examples are SOME of the reasons why the republicans won the last electon and kerry was soundly defeated .

WISE UP BOY :)

What if 'most' Americans decided the civil rights laws, or voted on slavery or whether women should vote (remember those voting for this right would be men)? As for the gun laws, most Americans don't want semi-automatics on the streets.

John, with respect you have got it all arse about face.

No one is proposing a law compelling gays to marry, or religions to marry gays. In fact it is the right - particularly the religious right - who are the ones who want to dictate lifestyles. All that happened in MA is that the Courts pointed out that the State discriminating against people based on there sexuality is against the MA constitution. Thus the State cannot stop same sex marriages. Again - no one is dictating a lifestyle from the left - quite the opposite.

As to Guns, there are not many people in America who want to ban guns. Indeed Kerry is an NRA member.

What is up for debate is some form of regulation or license scheme. Now if you have to be a certain age, undergo training and pass a test to get a license to drive a car - I think something similar for another potential leathal weapon is merely sane a rational. Again it is certain loony elements of the Right that diagree with this. I suspect when the next Al Qaeda attack in the US involves those easy to access assault weapons, now safely unbanned, a more responisible approach might be possible.

Making bigotry and homophobic hysteria the central plank of your government is nothing to be proud of.

Was Kerry soundly defeated? :-?
Rob, just what I was going to say.

he lost by 300,000 votes in Ohio.

One can of course cite the popular vote, but that means jack apparently.

my point was that WHOMEVER is in power use the excuse of having a mandate to pass what ever laws they have on there political agenda . when was a raise in taxas for example ever a POPULAR choice ?

As for slavery i do believe there was civil war over that issue A MINORITY of rich bigots living in the south * had slaves ,not all citizens in the southern states believed in slavery .

I agree with you about semi automatics :) and there is a believe a law banning certain types of automatics weaponns for private use you dont need a semi to (protect your property ).
