When I was little I always felt very hard done by as all my schoolfriends used to recount tales of stacks of pancakes and that they never had to have a "proper meal" first -we always had an ordinary dinner then pancakes for pudding, and we only got two each. Did you used to have to eat a savoury course first? How many did you used to eat?
Will you be having pancakes today? How will you have them? Will you toss? D
We were like you monster.
Today is to be an historic occasion in my house..... for the first time in 12 years I am going to make pancakes for pancake day!! I bought three fresh lemons yesterday (whilst humming a Jif Pure Lemon Juice jingle) for the occasion.
Now..... over to the Food forum for a really good pancake recipe!

Ooh thanks for the reminder D
Yep, we'll be doing it - kids have been reminding me for days.
We'll be having thin pancakes with chicken pie filling (homemade), followed by American pancakes with maple syrup.
DH is the tosser, so it depends when he gets home...
Didn't even know it was pancake day, I will have to tell the missus that she has a job for dinner tonight....
When we were kids we would have pancakes instead of the meal.
They were eaten as fast as my mum could make them, and until the batter ran out. lol
I hadn't realized it was Shrove Tuesday.
I won't be making pancakes, my kids don't care for them, they are 95% American when it comes to food. roll
We had pancakes instead of a proper meal as well. Like Wendy, we'd get them straight from the pan until the batter ran out. I always prefered orange juice and sugar as a child but now it has to be lemon juice.
I'm going to attempt to make some today D
Growing up it was regular Tuesday night tea for us first then it was pancakes with lemon and sugar.
When I made them the first year we were married they were an absoloute disaster! I did improve over the years but was never any good at tossing them. One year I did start a minor fire in the kitchen much to my then young kids horror so I didnt do pancakes too often after that and they have never let me forget it wink
As kids, we would have pancakes quite often as a late evening snack - Scotch pancakes or drop scones, which are quite similar to American pancakes (smaller, of course) but with butter and jam instead of syrup. We'd always have pancakes on Shrove Tuesday - I think this made a nice break from proper cooking for my mum.
I only discovered crèpes as a teenager and the concept of having a saucy filling.
Now, we have American pancakes with maple syrup once or twice a month - usually for Saturday lunch.
I had some crepes last week in Paris with lemon and sugar and it got me all nostaligic for English pancakes (American ones are, at best, too thick, and, at worst, like eating dry wall).
Can someone post a real English pancake recipe please?
Right, got hold of the missus, she wasn't interested in making me pancakes so we had them at her firms cafe. Yum!!
Oh Ta for the reminder. We live on them anyway. Nice thin pancakes spread with tinned blackcurrants and juice and honey and lemon. Yummy
We have pancakes with savoury filling quite often outside Shrove Tuesday. We use Delia's recipe and it's the messiest page in the recipe book! You'd think we'd have it memorised by now, but why waste precious brain space with something that's look-upable? ;)
4oz plain flour
pinch salt (if you must roll)
2 large eggs
7 fl oz milk mixed with 3 fl oz water
2 tablespoons melted butter
butter to fry them in.
Sift flour, make a well in the cente, break eggs into it. Start to whisk eggs, gradually incorporating flour. Then slowly add milk/water don't worry about lumps. When all added, slide rubber spatula round the edge of the bowl to loosen solid bits, then whisk until smooth and like thin cream.
Add the melted butter just before you're ready to cook them.
We had them like Wendy mentioned (and others) that mum stood at the stove and cooked them as we were eating them. Once the batter ran out (which she would water down a little towards the end to make sure there was enough for everyone) then that was it. It was always lemon juice and plenty of sugar and we didn't have savoury first. It was great fun, and messy when we were younger. I do it this way for us lot.
Phil, on the other hand, had it your way, Monster. Had to have dinner properly first, then they only had a couple of pancakes for desert that had been made before dinner and kept warm. They just don't taste the same done this way and only ever tried it once.
Ooh Ben I couldn't see how to keep pancakes warm and still be good. Poor Phil. lol
I think thats why we ate them the way we did, they get cold so quick, and only cooked one at a time, with 3 kids they get gobbled up faster than they can be cooked.
