o After hearing what happened to Zed's mum, remindes me of a strange crime static that I have gathered and maybe Rob s can help here.
approx 80% of breakings in the UK are Drugs related in some way or other. Plus we as people help keep this offence going ie if someone came up to you in a bar and said I have a cheap VCR going "no questions asked" I bet 70% of people would say "yea here's your money". But you know its been knocked off, so by that fact you help keep these people in business (so to speak).
If then someone broke into your house and stole said VCR, you would be so upset etc.

I disagree with this bit, I never dealt with any of those shady characters. And I'm sure I am in the majority.
Sorry but I for one would never buy anything from some dodgy geezer in a pub...........

But would you if he wasn't dodgy but someone you knew?
Sometimes you wouldn't know. In the UK I bought things that were advertised in the paper on occasion.

I can't vouch for the statistic, but it is certainly consistent with my experience in London. The vast majority of crimes came back to drugs if you followed the trail far enough.
However that is not the whole story. It was clear that the main problem was related to people trying to obtaqin the funds to buy drugs - as opposed to commiting crimes whilst under the influence - which was extremely rare in my experience. Compare this with Alcohol. I never came across someone stealing to fund an alcohol habit - but I did represent many people who commited crimes under the influence, from violence, to drunk and disorderly through to drink driving.
Not sure what, if anything this proves, other than the fact that alcohol related crime probably cost society more than drug related crime.
I sometimes wonder how many bargains on ebay are stuff that was knocked-off somewhere up the line.

Alcohol is a drug.

So are Cafffine and Nicotine, but i didn't get called out at 3am to defend anyone who'd gone on a coffee rampage or stolen to fund a tobacco habit either. :o
I was thinking of the illicit drugs - as, I believe, :D was Goose3.
I was more trying link the two than quibble, but I was in a hurry, sorry.

No apology needed, I was trying to be humourous - and perhaps not succeeding.
( you don't have to just buy it from some guy at the bar, what about car boot sales and the like. An officer I knew recovered alot of stolen goods from those places.

Over the weekend I was reading an article (not online unfortunately) commenting on the amount of stolen property that turns up on Ebay - some police departments have officers dedicated to reviewing Ebay and other sites and comparing them with lists of stolen property - evidently with some success :o
