Link not working John. Presume it is the Terri Schrivo case - where Jeb Bush got caught in flagrant violation of the Florida constitution and the Supremes refused to bail him out... must run in the family.

As to Schrivo:
1. Its disgusting the depths the religious right will go to to impose there theology on the rest of us;
2. Lesson to us all - get those Advance Directives (eg living wills) sorted - it could save those you love a lot of anguish.

Right on... the reason to keep her alive whatever retoric they spin is religious belief although the chances of a cure is always there as we are advancing so quickly in the world of medicine .

its been 8 years at least she has been like this , and going of on a tangent i must ask who *if any* family member is responsible for the medical bills .
im sure that is part of the dicision to cut of the life support if he (the husband )is paying for it .
Imo he has given her enought respect and consideration and needs to get on with his life .. am i wrong ?????

8) Just to add to this I have heard that the guy already has another women that he is going to marry, plus he would be making some money of the deal as well. He had also stopped her from getting any type of help either.

Its her family that want to keep her alive, but he's stopped them from seeing her etc.

Never as simple as black and white and as Rob S said, get them wills sorted etc.

I never thought about it until I had my surgery and they asked if I wanted to be bought back if I died etc.

Would you get a rather nifty exoskeleton with built-in lasers and a minigun like the baddie in RoboCop 2?

/wouldn't mind having that happen to me. Bwa ha ha ha bow down puny mortals etc.

The problem for cases like this, even in much more clear-cut ones than this one, is how to protect the rights of the disabled.

There was great sympathy a few years ago here in Canada for a farmer called Robert Latimer who euthanised his severely disabled daughter by placing her in a truck with the exhaust pumped in. He gave himself up immediately to authorities. Tracy Latimer's spine was twisted and she was in perpetual pain. Few doubted from hearing his testimony that her father was motivated by love after finding her pain unbearable. Being in the middle of the prairies on a farm, also meant he received extremely poor social services.

But what about Tracy Latimer, the daughter? She had no voice because she could not talk. She could not be consulted. The problem with making the judgement that one life is worth taking is that it sets an uncomfortable precedent. Ask any disabled group and they regard these cases as open-season on the handicapped. Whose to say the next person who deems someone's life isn't worth living is more motivated by just not wanting to look after them any longer, or by money or other reasons?

There was an outcry when Robert Latimer was finally sentenced to the minimum sentence of ten years for first-degree murder. Some judges believe there should be special provisions for so-called "mercy-killings".
But others, including many disabled groups say murder is murder is murder.
I wonder what she did in a past life to deserve all this?

bad karma.
If it were me, I'd want the feeding tube removed. Everyone around me knows that. I find it hard to agree with the husband here because he appears to be the only one saying that she wouldn't have wanted to carry on like this. Also, the fact that she can breathe for herself complicates matters. The only life support system attached is the feeding tube and many people live full and happy lives despite being dependent on feeding tubes. Obviously she isn't, but who's to say what the future holds?

It is a toughie.

Just a thought I've no time to flesh out right now, but if the husband wanted to remarry, couldn't he divorce her?
8) You are right Lee, where do u stop. I baby that is handicapped etc. take it all to far and you end up with a master race. It was not to long ago that the US sterlized individuals that it was thought were handicapped. It was a popular thing to do in 1926 and I think the last operation took place in 1972.
