What about the BeRo recipe. You can get if on the internet if you don't have the BeRo book.

I find kids don't really eat the cake anyway. They all want a piece but then see how many leave most of it in the bowl.

Small cake, lots of frosting, any recipe/cake will do. I use the "same weight of eveything" British sponge recipe, but frankly the children wouldn't notice if I painted bath sponges brown. I stopped wasting real chocolate on the recipe several birthdays ago.... it gets flavoured with cocoa now and no child has noticed.

Go American and use Betty Crocker or Alfred Hines.... everyone compliments me on my cakes EXCEPT when I bake them from scratch!

Yep, that is what I use - cocoa :)
And you are right, you can't go wrong if you use the same amount of everything (except cocoa that is :D ) for sponge cakes. And some baking powder and bobs your uncle ;)
