Hi all.........

We moved to the Indianapolis area last January, and I was wondering if there are any "Yorkies" around, heck any Brits for that matter? I grew up around here, but I know my Yorkshire born and raised husband is missing England, cricket, etc., so I thought I'd see what I could find out on here.

To be honest, I miss England too! cry

Many thanks,
Tiffany
Hello there. I'm not in Indy, but I think there are a few people found that area. Did you go to the F1 grand prix? That'll be a good place to find Brits.

Welcome to Britnet, anyway! D

What took you out there?
Welcome to Britnet,

I'm not in Indianapolis but I'm almost from Yorkshire.
Born and raised on the border of Lancs & Yorks.

Why not get your hubby to come join us on the boards?

If you got to the homepage of Britnet there is a contact list you could check out. There's about a dozen or so in the list for Indi area
Hi Tiffany, I moved to Noblesville about 15 months ago and the wife joined me about 4 months ago. We're about 15 minutes north of Indy.

We're originally from Leicester but moved to Canada in 1995 before moving here in 2003.

There are some other Brits in the area although I'm yet to meet any of them.

Chris.

No, we didn't go, though we would have liked to. My husband had to work, but hopefully we can make it this year.

Thanks for the welcome!

We moved to the Indy area to be close to my family, as I grew up here.

I just told my hubby about the boards this afternoon after I joined. He is planning on checking it out.

Thanks for the info.

My husband and I took a trip to Toronto back in Apr. '04, first time to Canada for both of us. Whereabouts did you live?

What brought you to Indiana? I think it's a bit too redneck for my hubby's liking, and after living in England for 6 years and then moving back here, I'm trying to re-adjust. How does your wife like it here?

We lived in Waterloo which is about an hour West of Toronto.
My daughter still lives in Ontario so we visit whenever we can.
When we were there my wife worked as a chauffuer and as most of the work was in and around Toronto, she grew to love the Toronto area.

I moved here for work purposes. I work in Tipton which is way more redneck than Indy. My wife has threatened me with the riot act should I ever even suggest we settle in Tipton.

She's on an H4 visa and so is not allowed to work. She is becoming bored to tears, longs to be able to work, does not see herself sitting around for the next 5 years waiting for a green card and will probably return to Canada so that she can at least work.

Can your wife not change her H4 visa to an H1, which would then enable her to work? I had not heard of the H4 visa, so looked it up and found the following: "It is certainly possible to convert H4 to H1, if one can provide proof, that he / she is qualified, has had prior experience in his/her field of expertise, and have a job offer from a company in the United States."

If your wife was a chauffeur in Canada, then surely she can provide proof of qualifications, etc., and it also says that she can get a drivers license with an H4 visa, so if she applied for a commercial license, which allows you to chauffeur, that would help in the way of enquiring about jobs, I would think.

I'm sure you have looked into all of this kind of thing, I just can't imagine being limited like that for 5 years, I would be going crazy as well, so can empathize with your wife. My husband couldn't work until he got his drivers license, which he had to wait 60 days to get, so he was freaking out over that, guess I should tell him it could've been worse!!

That is true but to the best of my knowledge she too would need to get a company to sponser her and go through all the usual labor certification to prove that there is not an American citizen able and willing to do the job - not very likely to be a positive outcome as I doubt being a chauffeur is considered "skilled" or "professional" in the eyes of the USCIS which it would almost have to be for the application to be successful.
There are a lot of people who move to the states and are forced to sit idle because of this.

Chris

Welcome to Britnet Needa.

Sorry no Yorkies here in Charlestown (2 hours south). I'm a repat Yank and Her is a Surrey lass.

We have a friend just accross the river in Louisville who's from Yorkshire though.

He's not a Britnetter I'm afraid.

Rest easy. To the best of my knowledge he has no group affiliation.

Where in Noblesville? I amm oving there this year but not from Yorkshire, from Liverpool. Scousers get everywhere dont they? Hope to hear from you soon and maybe meet for a pint or a coffee.

There's a new Subbuteo club starting up in Indy if that helps. No Brits in it yet, but it can help attract them...
