Hey All!

Just wondering if anyone out there knew of a low cost shipping company who would deliver food from the UK to Texas? My mother went out and spent a 100quid on food and was going to ship via DHL but they wanted 200quid to send it! And when they found out that there was food in the box, they said they couldn't take it, due to restrictions, paperwork, red tape, BS, etc.....

I want to get it shipped by sea as the food is about 6stone (38kg) in weight, so it would be cheaper.

Surely other people must have had food shipped from the UK to US before??

Thanks.

Gaz.
It's generally cheaper and easier to buy from Brit food suppliers here, especially given all the new food shipping regulations. The person you need to ask is Nigel Reed -the site owner- who tried to set up a Britnet food store but found that he could not make it worthwhile, even with orders from several people but he did look into all the shipping regulations.

I suspect in the long run, though, you will find it easier for your mum to eat that food and order through a Brit food supplier. There are many listed on our homepage Click here

What sort of food were you trying to ship?

Oh and welcome to Britnet! :) Sorry I can't be more helpful.

.....I wonder if you could contact one of the "personal shopping" companies who ship food and other shopping to order out from the UK and see if they could ship it for your mum, charging a fee for their service on top of the shipping charge? :-?
Then you'll get hit with the export/import taxes too. Cheaper to get from stores already here. Even though they get a little pricey.

Just spent $297. at the British shop west of here. Morph if you are reading this, yes I was over there last week. And got boxes of crackers, tins of biscuits, sausages galore.

Anyway welcome aboard, hope you get your goods. 8)
Well, if I had been given enough support, you could have requested anything you'd like and I'd have got it, but alas...)

Regards
Nigel
Support? So Nigel, remind me again... people should be buying Brit stuff they don't want or need from you for more than they pay locally just so a few people who don't have access to local stores can pay the same as they would through other mail order places? You're in the wrong country, mate! lol
Or is he? Market rules here, what the market will bear/bare.
wink 8) lol
Thanks for all the replies....

I don't think my mum's gonna be too thrilled when she finds out, especially since most of the food will go to waste!

'Tesco' teabags, jars, cans, packets, nothing perishable.

I have yet to try this avenue. Seems that I have exhausted the possibilities with shipping companies tho. No-one's interested.

She can probably send the tea by Royal Mail, if you're that desperate, but it'll honestly be cheaper to order it online.

If you do get the personal shopping companies to do it, though, I doubt it'll be cheap. Jars, cans and packets of what?

What is she sending that you can't get here? There's a reason there are so many companies suppling Brit goods by mail order and that reason is, it's virtually impossible to do it by yourself. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and all that, but the sooner you find alternatives the better.

I feel this may be an appropriate moment to quote the other half's motto: Adapt and Survive.

If you post here (or maybe in the food forum) the specific products you are missing, people may be able to tell you where you can find them in the states, what products are reasonable alternatives, or give you a recipe to make it yourself. And that's probably as good as it's going to get. But good luck with the shipping, I hope you do find a way around it.

:)

It would probably work out cheaper to buy an airline ticket home and lug it back with you. As long as you don't try to bring in fresh meat, some dairy, fruits and veg and seeds, and it's all for your personal consumption then there will be no problems.

See here

And if you look at the bottom of that page there is a link to "Sending store-bought foods" that has the relevant information.

Hope this helps.
