Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone has any experiences about marrying a US citizen and getting your name changed in your passport from your maiden name to your married name?
I'm hoping to travel to the UK in October with my husband. My passport is in my maiden name but I assume we'd book the tickets using my married name & then carry a copy of our marriage certificate and my state ID card with my married name on it.
But we've had some problems with our tax returns - the IRS doesn't recognise my social security number as it's in my maiden name. (Meaning we get $300 less of a refund than we should.) We went to the SS office to get my name changed in their systen. They typed in my alien number into their INS database to find that they still have me under my maiden name. So the SS people are going to write to the INS to ask them to get a move on and get it changed.
So now I'm a bit worried that we might have some similar problems with my passport being in my old name. Don't you have to send it to the British Embassy in the US to get it changed? I don't really like the idea of sending my passport in the mail.
Well, just wondering if anyone else could share what they did.
Thanks, Jennie
