Is it me or is american bread sweet? I don't know if it's the preservatives or what but Iv'e tried every loaf under the sun, wonderbread, sourdough etc., I eventually resorted to buying freshly baked uncut loaves of european bread, but I can't exactly make a chip butty with it. Has anyone found any pre-sliced bread that resembles english bread? Thanks you guys.
Yes, it's sweet and not robust (maybe that's why Americans don't use butter on sandwiches as it's impossible to spread without making big holes).
I found that brown bread was better than white, but it still takes a bit of getting used to. Rolls can be OK too.
Bread shop bread and organic bread was much better but horrifically expensive (and stale after a few hours). If you go to a bread shop, such as Panera or Atlanta Bread Company, they will slice the loaf in their machine for you.
There are quite a few threads on this in the food forum... this, however, is the TV forum.... lol
And there was me looking for our Joey and our Aveline and our Billy and Lilo Lil! What WOULD an American version of Bread be like, I wonder?

:D Me too. I thought "oh god, another show they're going to ruin" what would be the PC/acceptable version of "that protty vicar.."??
If you can develop a taste for rye breads, especially dark rye, I've found those to be the best breads here, I guess because of the huge Eastern European/Germanic/Jewish influence.
I miss Irish soda bread and just your average multi grain bread from the supermarket.
Panera Bread Company is the best......been there 3 times in the last week......cheese & brocolli soup with sourdough roll and half an italian sandwich YUMMMMMY !!! D
Where's me pudding?
Oddly, my grandad lived in the next street over from where that was filmed.
White bread here is awful, the Sara Lee White is the closest to half decent you can get. I have a independent baker near me and I told him about the differences. He tells me the bread here is much more fluffy because they do not use so much Gluten. He makes a great white loaf that is nearly like home, unfortunately it is $2.75 a loaf. I buy 5 at a time and put them in the freezer as they are so popular and sell out very quickly.
I make my own. D
For under $3 I can make 50 buns and four large loaves. They're not sweet, don't last for three weeks in your bread bin and it makes wonderful toast!
Martha regards.....

A very early purchase was bread machine after finding what was avaialable at stores, and for what price !
This was closely followed by, it is not necessary to use four tablespoons of sugar as in the american recipe, only two teaspoons are required to feed the yeast. o
If i buy bread i buy the oroweat health nut. Loads of grains and nuts and brown. Very tasty. After that it's the bread machine . )
