Hello,
Has anyone tested for Tb(latent TB infection) I had a positive skin test in a green card medical, now i have to take pills for 9 months. If i said no to the treatment i was to be reported to immigration.I was fit and well untill a usa doc got hold of me.......lol.Has anyone else got a story about there medical...............btw i cant drink beer, wine or any alcohol while on treatment(5 months 14 days to go!)
The skin test will always come up positive for a Brit who had the vaccination -they should have done a chest x-ray.
Something like that, anyway.
yep what Monster said. I came up positive, but my chest xray was fine. They still prescribed me the pills though roll
I had a chest x ray and all was clear, i had a tb jab as a teenager but it only lasts for 10 years, knowing all this i still WAS kinda force into tratment..........tb is on the up in the uk and usa
Didn't have the skin test so I don't know. They said they don't give the skin tests to adult Brits because it always shows positive. Clearly some do.... roll
It's tetanus that only lasts for 10 years.... TB is a one-off deal.
In the UK they (used to) test teenagers to see if they'd been innoculated against TB and if not you got the shot.

I think the reason I had to have it was because hubby was military. They put twice as much stuff under my skin as opposed to hubby and kids though  I told them of course it is going to show positive, but would they listen?
They give booster shots for tb, one every 10 years, most NHS staff have them.............5 months 14 days to cider wink

im so nackard
Well, I don't know about NHS staff but when we went for our Greencard medical we had an Indian doctor do everything and she insisted on us having a TB test. She said the x-ray was a waste of time because TB vaccines only last for 25 to 30 years maximum! So why you were told 10 years I don't know. The reason why I mention that she is from India because she was used to dealing with TB all the time and they give the immunization to babies over there so she was surprised we didn't get the jab until we were 11-12.
I agree with Monster, are you sure it is TB and not tetnus? Anyway, even though it has been nearly the 30 years since I had my TB I came up positive (I did let her know that mine would come out positive because for some reason I hang on to immunity really well). She was sure it was because I had come into contact with TB at some point and that is why I came up positive roll She did the x-ray, x-ray was clear, end of story. It was sealed and I was sent home with it. On the greencard medical forms it told everything that they did and that the x-ray came up clear. I did not need any medication because the x-ray was clear. so I have no idea why your doctor has told you otherwise.

My hubby was military too but I if I remember right all I had was the x-ray.
Doesn't everyone get the x-ray then?
I had to hand deliver it at JFK to immigration people.
American doctors can be so dozy...
Anyone who gets their visa in London has a chest x-ray as the TB-test because they know full-well that a skin test would give lots of false positives.
When my kids had their skin tests on arriving in the US, the first thing the doctor, who happened to be British, asked was "have they had BCGs?" (London-born children receive the BCG at birth).
Well, I don't know about NHS staff but when we went for our Greencard medical we had an Indian doctor do everything and she insisted on us having a TB test. She said the x-ray was a waste of time because TB vaccines only last for 25 to 30 years maximum!
They are looking for active TB which, given that it is a disease of the lungs, a chest x-ray is quite handy in making a final diagnosis.
The reason they typically do skin tests is that it is less risky than exposing someone to x-rays. They don't give the BCG in the US so can't see why there might be a downside to the Heaf test.
