I need this from a weight-loss perspective..

I used to put Soy Garden, a dairy-free spread on my toast that tasted almost as good as butter. It has no hydrogenated fats or anything trans or bad, but it's fat content is higher than your typical butter.

I also have used Brummel and Brown spread which is made with yogurt and tastes nice. It still is quite high in fat, although lower than butter.

I don't really like American butter too much and it seems very fattening in my mind to have it on toast...

Any ideas about what/which brand or type would be best to use?

I don't know if lower fat is better, or maybe no trans fat, or maybe one of those olive oil spreads... I'm confused!
We don't eat a lot of butter or any of these spreads per se.

To avoid the fat content I will sometimes roast a whole load of garlic and use that in place of butter (roasting kills a lot of pungency and it becomes very spreadable) however, if I fancy a little butter then it's Plugra butter.

It's made in the European style and does not have annatto (colouring) in it to maintain colour (because butter changes colour throughout the year based on the milk used).

My hubby had horribly high cholesterol so we ended up using one of the no trans fat spreads, Smart Balance.
We were told about Brummel amd Brown too but didnt care for that.

Having said that if the only thing you are using the butter/marge/spread i on is your morning toast I would go for whatever you like the tase of.
On 2 slices of toast in the morning it's not going to make you fat or kill you unless you have medical issues to deal with.
Kerrygold is my favourite but it's as much for a bar as about six sticks of the organic we generally get - I actually have to be there and asking to get Kerrygold.
Sometimes my local store has a "buy one get one free" offer on Kerrygold!

I also buy Lurpak when I'm flush.

Really?

We use Becel margarine. It looks and tastes like butter ( has that slightly salty taste)

The main reason we went off butter was for two reasons. 1 most butter seemed tastless and 2 it is so hard when taken out of the fridge.

No hang ups with food. Still eat what we have always liked, but in moderation. Try to do as much walking as possible. It's worked for me for the past 74 years.
We use butter, preferably unsalted. In our house it's hold the salt , pass the wasa crackers and the butter. Bread here is so sweet and loaded with corn syrup. If we do eat bread we tend to dip it in flavoured olive oil which is lightly warmed by standing it atop the toaster oven whilst it's in use.
If I'm going to use food as medicine I do it from the Chinese angle, bread and butter don't come into it. D

Becel, by the way, which I don't think is sold in the U.S, is made by the same company that make Flora in the U.K and it's virtually identical, made with sunflower oil and low in saturated fat and not hydrogenised. We like it too.

There is little hope for my arteries, I practically live on white bread and butter, its no use, I'm done for..
Yes, I am asking for that morning slice of toast so I don't think roasted garlic is a good idea!! o

I don't like unsalted butter so that's out. Will have to see if I can find an organic one at Trader Joes. I know they sell Soy Garden there. Will probably just stick with that then as I like the taste and the no trans fat bumpf.

Cheers.
Smart Balance usually on Honey wheat or 7 grain bread .
Hubby thinks its funny that our real butter is white and british butter is yellow.
Well we use that tastes JUST like butter stuff and saves the reallllll stuff for special occasions~
Always use Parkay spray butter which ain't bad. 0 calories....but then after about 100 sprays on the same piece of toast, is it still 0 calories? :o
I looked in Whole Foods and they only had 2 types of butter that weren't that "sweet cream" stuff. Both were "European Style" butter and went for about $5.99 a pack (4 sticks). I'm not that picky so I didn't get any. When I make some millions in my new job I might pick up a pack to try, but for now I'm sticking with Soy Garden. Soy is good for you, even if fat isn't... wink
