President Arafat is gravely ill at the age of 75.
He has the been the leader and symbol of the Palestinian struggle for many decades.
It would be a very sad and tragic loss. My heart felt sympathies go out to his wife, family and to the Palestinian people.

I'll join you in that. And let us hope the whole place doesn't go up. He was chosen by his people. Replacing him will be difficult. Of course Israel will no doubt refuse his request to be buried at the al-Aqsa mosque, in fact they've already sent troops there to enforce this decision.
If, as the younger Palestinians want, they get new leadership from within the ranks of younger members it could go fairly smoothly. Unfortunately it will probably be the old hangers on who rarely set foot in Gaza and then the bombings will increase.
Hasn't some body of folk in Europe actually been over there and blamed Israel for breeding the new young bombers by it's treatment of the Palestinians.?
I believe his is in his 9th year of a 4/5 year term. I really do believe he has done far more harm to the region than good. In fact i cannot see what good he has done. All we can hope is that someone with the intention of solving the regions problems will replace him.

I'm with you there Mr. B.
Also, I know one should have reverence at these times, but I find these condradictory reports from hospital officials/PLO spokespeople, hilarious. He's fallen into unconsciousness, no he's sitting up and waving, he's in a coma, he's not in a coma etc. It's starting to remind me of the bring out your dead sketch in Holy Grail.
Does all seem a bit comical as Lee points out.
Cultural differences maybe?
I got the impression that it is Israel that are the ones saying he is dead, in coma etc. and everyone else, including the French Doctors, are saying that they are wrong. Yahoo news made that clear when they first said he was dead - the headline news stated that Israel have declared Arafat dead but French doctors deny it! And what gives Israel the right to do that anyway!
I have to say I am getting very angry at all this at the minute, especially with Israel not allowing Arafat to be buried where he wants. Today I read that Israel have decided that he will be buried in the Gaza strip. What right do they have to decide where he is buried or not - It's about time the rest of the world stood up to Israel, big style including America, and told them to back off in no uncertain terms.
And how come all we ever hear is that Israel is the only democracy in that area when all of you are saying that Arafat was voted in by his people - doesn't that make Palestine a democracy too -? And how come Israel is classed as a country and Palestine isn't?
I don't know why I even try to understand all this because all I end up doing is asking even more questions and my head starts to hurt roll
We should declare aparteid rules on them like we did to South Africa.
:o

OK, so I obviously said the wrong thing and it was very funny and my brain wasn't functioning properly!  It's approaching that 40 that does it to ya!
What I meant was maybe the apartheid rules that South Africa imposed are similar to how I see Israel and Palestine. We, as a world, showed our discussed at such a thing and maybe we should do the same for Israel.
