Why do refs give yellow cards to players when they take off their shirts when celebrating scoring? Seems a bit harsh, is there a reason for that, is it an actual FA rule or just the refs decision?
It's a fifa directive. I think it applies to any sort of excessive goal celebration, but taking your shirt off is a real no-no.

according to the local channel 7 news here it was because of Brandi Chastain's beer gut :wink:
