I found this Radio Four programme, Grin And Bare It, very interesting.
Barbara Windsor hosts a 2-part history of saucy British comedy and the restrictions it faced. In the first episode I was fascinated to learn that some of the largest names of post-war comedy IE Frankie Howerd et al originally came on after a nudie show at the Windmill Theatre and found it a very hard act to follow!
The first episode can be listened to until Tuesday, when the second episode will come along and replace it. It apparently ends in the late 1960s so will presumably include Carry On...films and the like.
