Jeez - talk about got heated. On Crossfire today John Stewart called Begala and Carlson names, said their show was terrible, and the whole thing reduced to the theatre he said he was trying to stop. In the melle Stewart called Begala and Carlson partisan hacks, fake, harmful, and even managed to call Carlson "a dick." Begala and Carlson got irritated that Stewart argued he didn't have to be tough on people who came on his show cuz it's fake news. Carlson called Stewart Kerry's "butt-boy." Jeez!

I love The Daily Show. Stewart is excellent on it. And his first book was great. But I have to agree with Tucker - I saw John give a lecture at a college a while back and he's just as bad as they are. Sure he's not a news-man but he's every bit as involved in political theatre. His show is as full of spin as theirs is.
I saw the show and it was excellent. That Carlson bloke is a complete freak, who wears a bowtie?

I thought Stewart made them both look like tossers. Most entertaining stuff for a long time. Now why couldn't the debates have been more like this?

Have to agree there. Sometimes he gives the impression that he's arguing just for the sake of arguing and doesn't really believe what he's arguing.

Isn't it supposed to be full of spin!

I actually love the show and find that Jon can be as critical of the Dems as he is the Republicans. After all who can really keep a straight face watching the "This week in God" skit. Just hilarious!

ukm :)

Amazing that those two idiots didn't understand what JS was actually saying......(the between the lines stuff)

Andrew:
Sure the Daily Show is supposed to be full of spin. But it's part of the political media circus every bit as much as Crossfire is. And Stewart is as vocally dodgy as Begala and Carlson are.
Who cares if the Daily Show is full of spin. it's a COMEDY show. It's not a news programme, any more than Spitting Image or Have I Got News For You are news shows.

Anyone who uses the Daily Show as their source of news should have their voter registration torn up and be hit over the head with a big stick!
Anyone who uses Crassfire as their source of political information should also be put into a large sack with a couple wild boars on heat.

Now that would be a funny, interesting show!

I believe there is some inherent, as yet undisovered, arcane physical law of the universe that intrinsically links bowties and a-hole-ery.

Some day someone will write a lenghty paper on whether it is the bowtie that actually causes a-hole-ery or vice versa. It will be definitively shown under laboratory conditions that if an ordinary, pleasant, non-pompous person wears a bow tie under non-wedding or other black tie conditions, the atoms spontaneously deconstruct and reformulate on the neck of every self-important, newly graduated git in Washington writing for the National Review or some other equally blinkered rag.
Having just watched the clip and read the comments on the internet pages, think this one has backfired on Stewart unfortunately. I was with Tucker Carson on his views on the interview with Kerry. I really wanted Stewart to hammer into him, even if I sincerely hope he becomes president.

Must admit I hanker for the likes of Paxman, the newsnight team as a whole and Question time where politicans are treated as they should be, ordinary people with a some power, not the Gods they are made out to be over here. The closest to come to that standard is Chris Matthews. Ashley Banfield was also pretty good but unfortunately, she had a habit of being too truthful and got demoted pretty quickly.

But the point is that John Stewart's a freakin' comedian not a professional journalist. Why don't you have a go at Regis Philbin for not hammering in to him as well?

because John Stewart has the intellect to do it and with wit which most people don't have. Does Philbin actually have a brain or wit? I suspect Kerry would have been game for it and coped, unlike Bush, now that would be fun to watch, if it ever happened. Having said that, still love the show.

Maybe Stewart did it for ratings. Apparently the Daily Show ratings have tanked lately.

I liked this by Althouse-

"But Jon, we need you to be funny. That actually is the most important thing for you. Otherwise you're just Alanis Morissette blabbing about Iraq and I'm going to have to change the channel."
