NEW YORK In a deal estimated to be worth $100 million a year for five years, Howard Stern, one of the most popular personalities in American radio, said Wednesday he had signed a contract with Sirius Satellite Radio and would leave his longtime job at Infinity Broadcasting in January 2006.

Stern said by telephone Wednesday that his decision was driven both by a desire to help build satellite radio, which is not regulated by the federal government, and by the need to escape what has become ever-increasing restrictions on the content of his program.
