We are due to emmigrate to the USA on 21 September 2004.

What should we do with regards to travel insurance?

Naturally, we will want to cover our travel from the UK to USA and our luggage, but what about when we get there?

The usual "holiday travel policy" normally covers you for trips up to 30/60 days, but will these still be valid for these periods of time if you have no intention to return to the UK within the time period in question?

Does anyone have any experience/suggestions with regards to this?

Also, any tips on what to do with regards to HEALTH INSURANCE (particularly for the kids) would be most useful.
I don't think any standard, cost-effective, domestic policies will cover you for what you want. They usually have quite a few exclusions.

The kind of thing that is designed for the expatriate is expatriate insurance (we used Cigna Expatriate), and these policies can cover you worldwide from the moment cover starts.

I think most people who do their own immigration, forego insurance until they are on their feet in their new. Company cover usually takes 3 or 6 months to kick in.

If you have school age children, they will probably need to see a doctor in the US before starting school to get a sign-off on vaccinations and TB clearance (may depend on the local state). Fortunately, paediatricians in the US don't charge too much - less than $100 per office visit.
