Just watched this version of Night of the Living Dead, and i have to say the social commentary is profound. 1968, and the black man had to die too.
Have things moved on? Why is America, and for that matter Britain's, cannon fodder mainly black, or, for want of a better word, colored? Where did society take this leap and decide which color was best?
We got this huge DVD from Best Buy for $4.99, loads of horror or something like. Night of the living dead was worth the price.

I like the one where they are holed up in the shopping mall - Dawn of the Dead I think that was.
Always enjoyed watching B-movies like that on "Moviedrome" with Alex Cox as the host. "Q, the Winged Serpent" was good too.
I really liked Dawn Of The Dead too. And the modern tribute to zombie flicks 28 Days Later was great too - particularly the soundtrack.
I'm not sure the tide has fully turned regards who had to die during films like these. I think it sort of interchanged between minorities - very often it was most of the female characters who died due to being so innocent, powerless and child-like. Altho it wasn't uncommon to have a female be the only survivors (28 Days Later did this) to in some way exemplify the horror of it all. The teen horror flicks of the 90s and early 2000s had alot of fun with this by satirising the roles of the black characters ("yeah I'm the black dude who says "God Dang!" alot" and swears continuously!") and female roles ("oh no I'm so frightened I've lost my sweater and become a lesbian!!").
and female roles ("oh no I'm so frightened I've lost my sweater and become a lesbian!!").
:D :D :D
Horor movies of that era .and a lot of garbage today as well conform to the *traditional*hollywood *depiction of charactors .
IE
The leading lady is blonde ,dumb, stupid, and a knockout with her boobs almost spilling out of her dress .
The leading man is tall ,handsome, nicely groomed ,with impecable manners and always wins the fair lady and of course never dies ....
The villain is ugly, scruffy ,never takes his hat of when indoors ,and is the kind of guy you would,nt want to meet in the street , cheats, swears , and does all sorts of unsavoury things to get his way which of course in the end he never does .
Does any of that sound like real life to you ????
Of course not its a fucking movie ........ D )

What actually got me was after the death of the brother, the sister made it to temporary safety in the house, in shock and wotnot, then up turns the black guy, the good guy, who can't get a word out of the blonde and when the guys in the cellar come up, white guys, they expect to take over the leading role. Well, that just bit it for me. The black guy is doing all the right things but because he's black the white guy gets snitty. Then at the end he gets shot. The racism was just blatant.
Must stop listening to the world service. Listened prior to the movie to a program about the blatant and deadly racism that abounds in Russia and so was kind of taken aback when it surfaced again so obviously. The film was 68, Russia is now. Ah well, we live, but do we learn.
