- Yeah, I've been watching PBS - and there's a declaration of my age right there!
But - remember 'protest songs?'
Eve of Destruction, War, The times they are a Changing.
- Ahhhh, loved and felt 'em then and still do now.
Which ones do you recall?
Are there any recent ones? Is there a peace movement anymore?[/b]
Used to live close to Greenham Common - the protestors used to have a go at my cousin when she was riding her horse nearby evil My english teacher and some of the drama teachers supposedly used to go and put in time there on the weekends roll
They've all gone now the base is closed of course - I think a couple are up in Yorkshire at the "golf ball" surveillance centre (what was that called? Goonhilly Down?)
Never much cared for the protestors at the time but now I sort of see their point.

There is a location in Yorkshire apparently where there is a top secret NSA installation. I see a documentary on the BBC about 5 years ago where these people tried to take photos at the place but as soon as they got their cameras out the security people where there!! :o
By where I used to work in the UK at Defford there is another Golf Ball installation I have no idea what its for but all I know is, is that Cheltenham (GCHQ) and Malvern (RSRE) are both located near by!!
Anyhoo............
I often ask my wife where are all the protest songs now? My wife usually tells me that I have a Prefab Sprout album called Protest Songs and then I shut up!
I watch PBS too. I dont know whether it makes me old but it certainly beats having to watch crap like Survivor !
"Anarchy In The UK" is a protest song.
Hippy nonsense like "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" is a load of smelly patchouli smellling birkenstock wearing earth mother hairy armpit nonsense and just annoys all proper-thinking people. Even I'd turn the hoses on those people.
Yeah, I forget myself sometimes down the local Co-operative store and want to chuck some CS gas in there, to smoke out the hippies. wink
Of course being of the 60s counter culture era i had(still have some ) records of all the protest songs by Bob Dylan,Joan Bias ,Country joe Fish etc and many more lesser know artists who had a beef about something and put it to words and music .
I was however at one time a regular *event *at speakers corner in hyde park on sunday mornings .
I think Dylan's Masters Of War is pretty prudent right now.
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
Does none of Jackson's drivel count, then?
Earth Song
Written and composed by michael jackson.
Produced by michael jackson.
What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we’ve shed before
Did you ever stop this notice
This crying earth this we make sure?
Aaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaah
What have we done to the world
Look what we’ve done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying earth this we make sure?
Aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaaah
I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don’t know where we are
Although I know we’ve drifted far
Aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaaaah
Hey, what about yesterday
(what about us)
What about the seas
(what about us)
The heavens are falling down
(what about us)
I can’t even breathe
(what about us)
What about everything
(what about us)
I have given you
(what about us)
What about nature’s worth
(ooo,ooo)
It’s our planet’s womb
(what about us)
What about animals
(what about it)
We’ve turned kingdoms to dust
(what about us)
What about elephants
(what about us)
Have we lost their trust
(what about us)
What about crying whales
(what about us)
We’re ravaging the seas
(what about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(what about us)
What about the holy land
(what about it)
Torn apart by creed
(what about us)
What about the common man
(what about us)
Can’t we set him free
(what about us)
What about children dying
(what about us)
Can’t you hear them cry
(what about us)
Where do we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(what about us)
What about baby boy
(what about it)
What about the days
(what about us)
What about all their joy
(what about us)
What about the men
(what about us)
What about the crying man
(what about us)
What about abraham
(what was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn
Aaaaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaaaaah
Profound.
Deep.
"Aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaaaah"
Mmmmmmmmm.
Nice.
As Edwyn Collins put it....
"Too many protest singers
Not enough protest songs"
Not exactly a protest song, but I was listening to Don McLeans 'Primetime' the other day and I thought it's also still as poignant today.
I liked Elvis Costello's 'Shipbuilding', also covered by Robert Wyatt, about the Falklands War. It's very subtle and quite moving.

Hue And Cry (the scottish duo) did a good live version of Shipbuilding too.
Less subtle about the Falklands War was Captain Sensible's 'Glad It's All Over'. Pretty naff, but I still liked it.

When I was living in Newbury they had a paintball place setup using the old army houses. Was fun. Not sure if it's still there now. I believe there was still a guard on duty.

Nigel
Yeah I played paintball at Greenham in the abandoned quarters. Probably the best place I've played to be honest.
Best moment was when someone threw a smoke bomb into a room I was holed up in and it ignited some rags on the floor.
I was thinking "this is getting a bit TOO realistic".
