Iraq has reinstated the Death Penalty and once more has joined the rest of the democratic countries that still use this ultmate deterant??
I wonder what they will choose as the method of carrying out the sentence.
Countries and territories which retain the death penalty for ordinary crimes
AFGHANISTAN, ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA, BAHAMAS, BAHRAIN, BANGLADESH, BARBADOS, BELARUS, BELIZE, BOTSWANA, BURUNDI, CAMEROON, CHAD, CHINA, COMOROS, CONGO (Democratic Republic), CUBA, DOMINICA, EGYPT, EQUATORIAL GUINEA, ERITREA, ETHIOPIA, GABON, GHANA, GUATEMALA, GUINEA, GUYANA, INDIA, INDONESIA, IRAN, IRAQ, JAMAICA, JAPAN, JORDAN, KAZAKSTAN, KOREA (North), KOREA (South), KUWAIT, KYRGYZSTAN, LAOS, LEBANON, LESOTHO, LIBERIA, LIBYA, MALAWI, MALAYSIA, MONGOLIA, MOROCCO, MYANMAR, NIGERIA, OMAN, PAKISTAN, PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY, PHILIPPINES, QATAR, RWANDA, SAINT CHRISTOPHER & NEVIS, SAINT LUCIA, SAINT VINCENT & GRENADINES, SAUDI ARABIA, SIERRA LEONE, SINGAPORE, SOMALIA, SUDAN, SWAZILAND, SYRIA, TAIWAN, TAJIKISTAN, TANZANIA, THAILAND, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, UGANDA, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, UZBEKISTAN, VIET NAM, YEMEN, ZAMBIA, ZIMBABWE
Its an eye opener to see how many countries still have the death penalty.

KEITH what in your opinion is a ORDINARY crime and what ordinary crime in america carries the death penalty ????
And define a *not ordinary crime *
I would take 'ordinary' crime to be murder for one since it happens unfortunately everyday. Extraordinary would be something like treason which I think in the UK still carries the death penalty???

You answered Johns question
Countries whose laws provide for the death penalty only for exceptional crimes such as crimes under military law or crimes committed in exceptional circumstances
ALBANIA, ARGENTINA, ARMENIA, BOLIVIA, BRAZIL, CHILE, COOK ISLANDS, EL SALVADOR, FIJI, GREECE, ISRAEL, LATVIA, MEXICO, PERU, TURKEY
As you can see the UK is not in that group.

I guess Jack Straw did away with the death penalty for treason a few years ago.

There was also a death penalty for 'piracy'.... o

So now they can execute Saddam? I realise that might offend you Keith - maybe he could get political asylum in Canada.
On the same day interim government authorities also raided and closed down the offices of Al-Jazeera.
This is a definition of "freedom and democracy" that I was previously unaware of.

I doubt that HU as all of his buddies are in the Bush administration: Rummy et al.
So he could just drop in the Good old USA.

What other countries do with their criminals is up to them.
I do not believe MY government has the right to kill potentially innocent people on my behalf. It has rarely proved a deterant and only de-humanizes us.
What other countries do with their criminals is up to them.
so what's the point of this thread then you started?

For the same reason others post news items of general interest.
And to annoy you
And to annoy you
come on then Keith, am sure you can do better than this.
However last few weeks I've been looking at the case of Kenny Richey a Dutch born British Citizen from Scotland, on Death Row in Ohio.
The case against him has more holes in it than Swiss Cheese, yet unless OH governor Bob Taft intervenes then he'll probably die.
Richey was convictwed of murder and arson, he alledgedly climbed on the roof of a duplex with 2 cans of gasolene and set fire to the house.
The fact that he had a broken arm at the time apparently is irrelevant :o

You have a website or any links about this...?
Keith is definitely right about one point. The death penalty is most certainly not a deterrant. Crimes in the US have not decreased as the number of criminals executed increases. Most murders are NOT premeditated so the idea of a death penalty is not really on a criminals mind. The US continues to be the most violent developed country in the world and I can see no turning back from that.
Banning firearms apart from being a political hot potato has become really impractical due to the sheer number of firearms in circulation.
If the death penalty is not a deterrant then what is I wonder?
I really wonder what it will take to make this country a safer place. The US has a larger percentage of its population in prison than any developed country, so that doesn't work. Putting people to death doesn't work.
Any ideas??
