Hey guys...
I finally got my Permanent Residence Card which lasts for 10 years, and my social security Number.
Just out of interest what would happen if my wife divorced me? WOuld I have to leave the U.S or would I still beable to live and work here AND apply for citizenship in 4 years or whatever it is?
You're permanent resident status is yours - it is not dependent on your wife, although she still is responsible for the I-864 (until you've become a citizen or worked 40 quarters).
On the basis of marriage, you are eligible for naturalisation after 3 years; in your own right, it's 5 years.
Congratulations, Neil.
Still waiting here......... roll

Sorry to hear that Debs...
So basically (not that I hope it happens) (but you know what lifes like) if my wife and I did get divorced say in 1 year or whatever I can still live and work in the U.S and she couldn't get me kicked out or anything crazy like that?

Your permanent residence is not conditional upon your marriage.
OK, but shes still resp for the I-864, which is what exactly?
Trying to get you kicked out is a waste of time.
Having lived it, it is exactly as described by Ameriscot.
Still, hope it never comes to that for you.
All the best!
Edited to add that by signing the i-864, she's vouched for your financial security until a certain time - so if you needed government aid, unemployment etc. she'd be legally responsible to pay this to you or compensate the government until you are a citizen OR have worked so many hours (even if you are divorced).
